If it's downloading a lot of emails, that's normal. (If it's a new phone, it's going to be syncing for a long time if you get a lot of email.) But 32% drain in 5 hours, considering how hard GMail was running, isn't abnormal.

Once GMail settles down, check that Awake line after charging and letting the phone sit overnight. It should be almost all white. If you get a lot of blue when the phone wasn't being used, something is keeping the phone from sleeping, and that eats battery power.

Seriously this is getting bad to worse pretty quickly. 8 hours and 27% and this is when I'm at work and didn't use the phone much

Do you still have all of your messages sitting in your inbox? Or do you have them archived?

If you have thousands of messages unarchived, it's probably trying to index all of them.

I'd clear the cache and if that doesn't help... Sign out of your google account and sign in again. Something is cause it to hold the phone awake.

40 a day shouldn't do it. I am getting over 100 a day due to the forums. Something is causing the app to hold awake and that's why the drain is occurring.

Something seems amiss. Seems it is keeping your phone awake. Today I got around 200 emails.
In addition to the above, try uninstalling the updates to Gmail

Yeah it also consume a bit battery because its a running app if you once opened or use it. So that make sure to totally close it on your application manager.
This is not needed. I have never done this for Gmail

It's not so much the daily influx I was asking about.

What do you do with emails once you have read them/dealt with them?

Specifically to Gmail, since that is the app you are having issues with...do you archive messages you are finished with, or do you simply leave them hanging around in the inbox?

If they are hanging around unarchived, I think your phone is trying to index them all.

I would second the suggestions to clear cache and reboot, see if that clears up the problem.

And if you have a lot of messages unarchived, you might want to consider dealing with that.

That's not correct.

Gmail works just fine on its own in the background. You do not need to manage it manually. It is not a significant resource drain if it is set up properly.

I honestly like the Gmail app but if I still have these issues since deleting the update and re-installing I'll just disable and use the native Samsung app

Okay...that's still not answering the question...

What is archiving ....never used the Gmail app till a month ago. And if I have to do whatever it is to save battery I just won't use the app ...better apps elsewhere like the native one I am fine with

Suit yourself. The Gmail app works as well as any other email app out there.

If you want to use another app out there, it's personal preference. Not because there is anything "wrong" with the app.

Archiving is a feature of gmail. (it is a feature of other platforms, too) It removes an email from the inbox when you are done with it, but it doesn't delete it. You can search for it at a later date if you need it.

An important feature once you have accumulated a few thousand messages over the years.
