Its whatever camera they used to film the video usually. Sometimes things can only upload in 720P and and 1080P. Youtube isnt updated to run 2K res yet or if it was u would have to have some good internet lol.

The answer is already in the other thread on this topic - http://forums.androidcentral.com/showpost.php?p=4109583.

    It is Google.

Read the other thread mentioned above. Its explained there and also states that there's currently a "fox" that works for some, not all.

If ur phone have 1080p resolution it'll show up on videos that have that resolution. Just click on the video via YouTube app then click the settings and choose quality. It'll give you all the options

I have both iPhone 6 plus and note 4. YouTube was patched on ios with the option to select 1080p. But 1080p never steamed perfectly (I'm on sg fibre w 1gb download speed n a pretty high end WiFi router.)

On iPhone 6 plus. YouTube automatic setting tries to put out 1080p than buffers and switches quality to 480 to catch up. Resulting in back and fore quality w constant buffer pause. Making it almost impossible to make a through a video on 1080p or auto setting. Was much better when they lock max res at 720 before and streamed without quality drop or pause. I stop using iPhone for youtube because of this. Every video I had to click the gear icon and lock it 720 manually.

My guess is google. and locking it at 720 was the right thing to do.
