    Really simple question:

If I root, will I be able to tether automatically for free, or will it require extra steps like on the Nexus 5?

    Free?
That depends on what kind of contract you have with Sprint.
I don't want to pay any extra for a service that should be free by default. (That's a discussion that's gone on for long enough.)

I'm asking if root access alone will enable my ability to use my device as a hotspot or will extra steps be required to enable it.

On my Nexus 5, I rooted, but it required a few additional steps to enable the hotspot feature. It involved changing a few vaule settings through Root Explorer.

There are additional steps, but they're very easy

For 1, what plan are you on, because I can tell you straight out. On my 20gb share plan, hotspot and tethering are included.

Unlimited Plan. It doesn't included the hotspot feature by default. Gotta subscribe.
