Note 4-Verizon-Battery Issue

Hi all,

I'm new here and want to thank you in advance for your patience in addressing what I know is a much drawn out topic. I just got a Note 4 from Verizon 8 days ago after originally upgrading from an iPhone 5 to LG G3. The G3 was my first Android device. I returned the LG G3 after 3.5 weeks because I was not very happy with the battery life. I am beginning to think I must be doing something wrong if I am having similar problems with a second, unrelated phone.

The past few days, I have been bringing the Note 4 down to about 40-45% battery with 2-2.5 hours of SOT. This is concerning to me because I have heard such fantastic things about the battery life and I am on the lower end of moderate use. I read the news on news apps and browse things on wikipedia via google chrome for a couple of hours and never play games or watch any videos.

I have been trying to read through the different threads here on Note 4 battery life, and adjusting my settings accordingly, before bothering you guys. The battery life is great, as long as I don't actually do anything with my phone, but whenever I start, I see it lose 1% every 5 minutes in front of me. I called Verizon and they basically told me to charge it to 100% and go about my day without really using it to see how it goes. I did so, and it lost 4% over night ( 100-> 96 which I think is good ) and has done well all day, except when I actually use it :-\

I have attached some screen shots for everyone, and I know at first look the stats look great, but like I said before, under normal usage they tell a different story. Also included is two pictures of my apps in case anyone recognizes something that might be contributing.

Thank you all very much for your help and patience in dealing with this once again!

Welcome to Android Central! Did you see this recent article? Galaxy Note 4 battery life tips | Android Central

Also, tap on the Cell Standby entry in your battery stats and show us that screenshot. Is there much Time Without Signal? Poor cell signal can kill the battery.

Do you have an SD card inserted? A corrupt file on a card can contribute to battery drain, because the system's Media Scanner gets hung up on that file, leading to increased CPU usage. Try unmounting the card and removing it, then reboot. You could also insert the card into your computer and run chkdsk: http://forums.androidcentral.com/am...guide-using-chkdsk-fix-corrupted-sd-card.html

Re: Note 4-Verizon-Battery Issue

Hi,
Thank you both for your quick replies! I did read all of the discussions on this topic, and adjusted my settings accordingly. I have disabled all of googles auto sync, and even changed my cell preference from global to LTE/CDMA like I had seen someone suggest.

I do have an SD card but it is brand new. I installed it in the G3 and transferred roughly 200 songs from iTunes, and then moved that card to the Note 4. I did see many suggestions related to the SD card but thought that was maybe more for older cards, especially since I don't see anything in my battery stats that looks like it would relate to that.

I will try to use my phone more normally today and post some more screen shots after work as to the results. (63% 6:50 am ) I hate to sound paranoid especially since the battery stats look alright at first glance, but I would rather find out if I have a problem with the phone ( rare, I know ) before my 2 week period is up.

Again, thank you all so much!

Hey welcome to Android. I've learned no what how much you tweak your phone the battery is going to drain quite fast because of the Android system. Realistically if you are concerned with the battery life your best bet is to get a spare battery or an extended battery.

Re: Note 4-Verizon-Battery Issue

Im on verizon with a note4... when actively using my phone i see a battery drain, but still with moderate to heavy use my phone lasts from 100% at 7am to ~40% at 9pm.

Turn off all the bloatware.
limit background data on the things you dont want but cant turn off.
download Nova launcher and set it up to make your phone more efficient
Definitely keep that brightness down.

Another thing I noticed is that if you let apps stay open in the "recent apps" menu, you actually save power. I guess instead of burning CPU to open them each time, its more conservative to just let them run.

Re: Note 4-Verizon-Battery Issue

I tried gsam but with the limitations of Kitkat and not being rooted I didn't see what it offered me that the stock battery option under settings did. The biggest battery savings I received were when I changed Location from High Accuracy to Battery Saving. I am a fairly heavy to moderate user and if I leave home with a 100% charge in the morning I can make it thru the day just fine.

I do also have Nova launcher but I have read from a few different people who say they have gone back to Touchwiz and gotten an extra hour of sot. Anyone here experience that? I am maybe going to try it sometime.

Re: Note 4-Verizon-Battery Issue

Checking back in here, really impressed by all the quick replies on a topic I'm sure people are tired of hearing about 😄.

Have been using my phone more normally so far today and I'm down to 39% as I write this. That is down 24% since this morning. Currently at 2h 40 m SOT. I would guess about a little over an hour of that is from today. Location is off ,WiFi is off and all other changes to settings people have suggested in other threads has been applied.

Really love the phone just wish I could get to the SOT others are getting. Will post more screen shots this afternoon after work.

I agree with the previous poster, I did have gsam but since my phone is not rooted it was showing the same as in the normal battery stats.

Down another 3% since I started writing. 😂

Re: Note 4-Verizon-Battery Issue

If you have location settings on, I suggest using the power saving option there. I usually only turn on the high accuracy option when I'm using Maps to navigate. Otherwise, the power saving option works well enough.

Re: Note 4-Verizon-Battery Issue

Hello again,

My battery is now at 13% after more moderate use today. I have just under 4 hours SOT and used about 50% battery throughout the day, which I think isn't too bad. I really would just love to get to that 5-7 hour SOT that most of you are getting! However, I don't see that happening. I'm stuck between thinking things will shape up and that there is something possibly wrong. As many others have said, its an issue they want to figure out before that golden two week period is up. I am backing up and wiping clean my SD card, to start fresh with my phone once its charged. While that is going on I would like to post a few screen shots to end the day. Tomorrow I am going skiing so I won't have much SOT.

Thank you everyone for your continued help and patience!

Re: Note 4-Verizon-Battery Issue

Hey,
At first look, things do look pretty great, however the first 30 or so hours of that time I did not do much on the phone. My main concern is the SOT. I agree that while the phone is in standby it does great !

Re: Note 4-Verizon-Battery Issue

Hope everyone's been having a great weekend!

I wiped my SD card clean yesterday and reinstalled and it seemed my battery life was up and down, sometimes seeming good yet others seeming quite poor. I am confident that my phone does great in standby, but I feel like it loses a lot with general use.

In short, I have removed the SD card ( as many of you suggested, thank you! ) and did a factory reset. I am going to start from scratch and not from a backup. I wanted to upload a couple of screenshots from this weekend to see if anyone has any input on those. I am going to try it this way for a few days since I need to decide by Wednesday if I should bring it back to Verizon ( I know how rare it is to have a bum device )

Again, thank you all for your continued help!

Re: Note 4-Verizon-Battery Issue

The people that are getting 5 to 7 hrs SOT are getting it with 12 to 15 hours of total time between charges. With over a day and half between charges your battery is operating fine.

Re: Note 4-Verizon-Battery Issue

Hi,
Thank you all for your input on my issue ( or non issue! ) I reset my phone last night, and things look alright. I have about 2.5 hours SOT today with 60% battery left which I am going to have to accept as normal. I am certainly very happy with the phone's capabilities so all seems ok.

Thanks!!

Re: Note 4-Verizon-Battery Issue

I wonder, for those that get shorter than expected battery life do you have your screen brightness set to auto (or dim). Also, do you have apps like Facebook or Twitter that may like to reach out and touch someone every other second?
