Regarding this issue: Unfortunately contacts has stopped working

If you are getting this message/notification, please check the Application Manager>All>Phone and see if there are multiple instances of the Phone app. Then check the details to see if they are the exact same version. This issue seems to be present after the Lollipop upgrade over multiple phone manufacturers/models.

I have a suspicion that the Lollipop upgrade may be producing multiple instances of the Phone app that is causing this issue. I have no fix at this point short of reimage/repair (based on carrier).

If you can verify that you have multiple instances of the Phone app in Application Manager, please reply to this thread.

    Thank you.

I went from 59% total storage usage to 81% overnight on my S5 and my contacts wouldn't load at all, just kept saying updating. I've been trying to fix it all day. I tried the dialing *#9900# deleting the dumpstate/logcat. I did the the holding Power, Volume Up and Home buttons and wiping the cache partition. It wasn't until i was reading the earlier parts of this thread that i realized i needed to look at my Contacts Storage and the Phone app.
I had 3 instances of Phone, 2 with the Phone Symbol and another with an Android symbol. My Contacts Storage was at 5.61 GB!!!!!!!! I don't have any contacts saved to my phone, they're either in Google or my Samsung account, so i just did a Clear Data. So far, so good. My Contacts Storage is back down to less than 10 MB but I still have 3 Phone apps. Not going to mess with that until something else happens.

In the App manager clear the cache for contacts. Do not clear "data"
Yep. Always fixes my annoying issue since I bought it

Also if this doesn't work, do a cache partition clean.. Last time cleaning the above cache didn't work and tried cache partition and fixed it ( I know its odd but worked)

Sounds stupid. But I have searched high and low. I have a Verizon Galaxy Note 3. It was my freaking voicemails. Deleted some and it worked great.

Don't discount what you just tried! It may indeed be the solution to the problem!! First, about my situation. I have a Samsung Galaxy S5, Verizon, not rooted, and I had never seen this "contacts has stopped working" message until yesterday afternoon. After doing some web searching to find the possible cause of the problem I happened to find this site and I had been working my way through all the suggested "fixes" with no success - until i read your post about deleting some voicemails. I went in and deleted my most recent Visual Voicemail, which was from a number that I'd never seen before. I thought it was weird that only the area code got logged in my recent history, but the voicemail showed that it was a legitimate call from a number that shouldn't be blocked. I deleted that potentially problematic voicemail, re-booted my phone, and voila - the contacts stopped working message has not appeared since - and I've accessed my phone contacts and recent history both from the "phone" icon and the "contacts" icon, with no issues. So, success for an hour or so. We'll see after a few days if the problem stays gone or comes back. I will report back in a few days. I wonder if we've uncovered a subtle Android-Samsung bug that may be related to the data stored locally in the Visual Voicemail cache?

BTW - In response to the other poster, I DO have multiple instantiations of the Phone app on my phone, and they do all have the same version number, but as I noted above that doesn't appear to be causing me any problem now that I've gotten rid of the offending visual voicemail.

I just started having this issue this morning. Software updated a few weeks ago. I have disabled google+, cleared cache for contacts and I still cannot dial a number, I can call my contacts but once I open the phone and start dialing I get the "unfortunately, contacts have stopped".

    Sprint Samsung Note 3
    Software version: N900PVPUE0H1
    Android version: 5.0
    Kernel version: 3.4.0-4453878

I do have 3 instances of the phone app running and they all are the exact same version - N900PVPUE0H1, I have not done a factory reset and at this point I really don't want to, but I may have no choice! This sucks!!

I do not use visual voice mail nor do I use sprint voicemail. I have always used youmail as my voicemail and I have never had this problem until today.

I had the same issue with trying "everything" mentioned in this thread and still got the error when the phone key was pressed. (S5 on Verizon)

PROBLEM SOLVED by deleting the last voice mail I received before the issue started occurring. Coincidentally, the number logged for the caller was only 3 digits long - just like another post mentioned - don't know why this happened.

Issue has not came back since the 3 digit number was deleted from voice mail - weird, but back to functioning properly without having to perform a factory reset!!

I also had a visual voice mail from a three digit phone number ( from a blocked caller id, someone from a Courthouse.). I deleted the two voicemails in question, the issue went away. I quess the three digit number does not sit well with the android system.

Mine stopped today when I disabled the Contacts App on ATT Samsung Galaxy something. I finally solved it by going through all my related apps and found that "Contacts Storage" app was not enabled. I enabled it and now have Contacts working; (but unfortunately have to re-enter all the data for my former Contacts address-book).

T-Mobile gave me a solution to this problem. I don't know why this isn't out there:

"Go to Settings>Application Manager>All tab, find Google Play Store and clear cache and then clear data as well. **Heads up, if you do this, you will need to know your gmail and password to sign back in to the play store after**
Same steps on Google Play Services, and Google Services Framework. After this is done, immediately power off for 10-15 sec "

I have gone around and around on this. My symptom was that I couldn't use dialer as it would complain that COntacts had stopped and exit immediately. I did everything including cache clearing, Google+ deletion, etc, and eventually full up manufacturers reset. Interestingly enough, after the reset, dialer worked, until all the apps updated, maybe it was the Uber app that did it, not sure, contacts still stopped working. Although Contacts WAS actually working, by the way, it was really just dialer

WORKAROUND/SOLUTION: I decided to just install a 3rd party dialer/contacts app, which worked flawlessly. I happen to use RocketDial but I have a feeling any replacement dialer will work. Reinstalled Google, Uber etc, all is working

I went to 3 different Verizon stores and the last one talked to tech somewhere in some far away tower--
they claimed the only thing that would work would be a factory data reset--which I did. Problem quickly came back. Dug into this thread and saw the thing about deleting the voice mails. Tried it and it immediately worked--even without rebooting. Then I saw the thing about the 3 digit phone call and it struck a note. I had a weird call from 697 right before the issue and it showed on voice mail. Someone on another thread claims its from a democratic fund raising group.

Just replying here to offer my own solution (after all the other ones in the thread didn't work for me).

It's certainly odd, but I'm using a (very) old version of Android which doesn't have most of what the guys here have. It's a phone simply intended to be a phone, so there's no Internet access.

Anyway, when I went to all of my apps, I deleted all of my data for both the Contacts and Contacts Storage apps, and then forced them both to stop. Then, I opened up the Contacts app again to restart it, and the error stopped occurring.

I've had this issue in the past as well, where sometimes certain numeric combinations might've been saved as an erroneous contact, causing Contacts to misbehave. But that time, a full reset fixed it.

Certainly YMMV, but if you don't mind spending some time to backup your contacts list, give it a shot.

It happened to me, I did everything, call Tmobile, tried everything, even reset the phone and lost a lot of things.... but finally got it.
Go to settings and under -Personalization- change to standard mode.
once changed it, the message disappeared for me. If I go back to easy mode, the message will come back.

Hope this works for you too.

So this just started last week. Seems to do it either when i unlock my screen or just at random. I havent changed anything, and i have done a cache partition clear to see if that would help and it hasnt.

Any ideas? Verizon note 4, not rooted, no launchers.

    Verizon Note4 w/ Tech 21 case
I think I saw something about contacts being updated to fix "the problem". I think we've tried it all and we just have to wait. I'm thinking of taking my ph into Tmoble and I probably will but thinking they don't have a fix either.

What I did figure out though, is that I can ADD a contact to MY FAVORITES to be able to call them....if that helps anyone, I'm glad

I had the same problem. Alot of people said deleting voicemails worked, others said Google+ was the problem so they disabled it. But nothing worked for me so I went into:
    1. Google+ App
    2. Account settings
    3. Clicked contacts
    4. Clicked Keep contacts up to date

After this I clicked on contacts once more and it worked perfectly again. I hope it works for anyone else if nothing else worked either.
