I don't have a Lumia 1520. My wife has a 1020, and I used to have one. It's camera is still the best quality wise on the market. My best guess after having used a 1520 for two weeks would be that the 1520 will best the Note 4 ever so slightly. Nokia's cameras at 20MP or higher are phenomenal. But the 1520 is lacking in many other areas. I used to be a WP fan boy and since switching to Android, I haven't looked back. I didn't realize what a difference there was between the quality of the existing apps on Android vs. The quality of the same apps on WP.

I have both. I've done some testing in the past between the both of them. Low light, bright sunshime, overcast outdoor, settings on auto, settings manulipated by me, fast moving stuff, using zoom, etc. To me, there was no difinitive winner. When you thought the Note would excel, the Lumia prevailed and vice versa. They are both very capable cameras. After the Denim update to WP 8.1, the camera got better. My testing was pre Denim.

I got both as well and my findings have been much the same as yourself but if I had to call one then it would be the Note 4, I also have a 1020 and that blows them both into the weeds.

Using the Nokia phones is easier but that could be because I'm used to them more, also when using them you quickly realise how useful the camera button is.

I have both, and I just took these pictures for you :
    1520:

These are the pro, high resolution images. (about 5MB in size), completely auto mode. I did no manipulation to them.

Here are the Note 4 pictures, exactly the same distance and pictures:

It's amazing that the 1020 came out on July 26 2013, and almost 2 years later it's still by far the best cell phone camera on the market. I also agree having a dedicated phone button with support for half click to auto focus like real cameras makes a big difference. Too bad the 1020 has so many problems with 8.1.

I didn't have any problems with 8.1 but I did a clean install with a hard reset after the install. I tried on my 925 doing just the install without a hard reset and I had all sorts of problems so I reverted back to 8.0 and then did a clean install by doing a hard reset both before and after installing 8.1 and had no problems after. The battery in all three of my windows phones(925,1020 & 1520) increased after 8.1 and with the 1520 I get between 13-16 hours screen on time when I have tested it but as you'll now it is hard to measure SOT on windows because you have to manually keep note of the times you are using the phone. Stand by time is another thing I love with WP, my 1520 uses 0.1% per hour over night.

All this talk of WP makes me hanker after my 1520 so I might use it for the next week or so to give it some love. Makes the Note 4 look 'pocket size' though.

I tried everything with the 8.1 issues I had. Hard reset, reloading the rom, etc. It would freeze while charging every night. I went through 4 replacement devices through Assurion before they ran out of 1020s. My wife's one does not have this issue though. Many others also have this and there is an ongoing thread on wpcentral, and another on MS support forums regarding this issue. MS has not resolved it. The 1520 feels bigger than the Nexus 6 because of its edges. It's a great device, but they should have used the 1320's rounded chassis.

Is it the camera specifically your looking to compare or the devices overall.

My 1520 is away for repair at the moment but I still have a 1020, Note 4 and CM1. If it's the camera quality your interested in then both do a superb job although you would be better looking at a Panasonic dmc-cm1 which is the only android phone I've found that can beat a 1020 . The Note 4 is generally regarded as one of the best shooters out there though but Lumia camera offers manual controls. That and RAW file use.

There are lots of reviews online given even comparisons of the camera if that's what your looking for.

The camera on the 1520 is the same as the one on the 930. So here's your answer http://www.phonearena.com/news/Nokia...p-last_id67659

And you didn't see the blind comparison between the N4, i6+, and the 1520 a few weeks ago where the N4 won like 9 out of 10 times. It's all subjective. When one thinks something is washed out or too saturated or the blacks aren't deep enough, someone else thinks opposite. They are all great phone cameras. Sometimes my N4 takes great photos, sometimes crap photos. Sometimes my L1520 takes great photos, sometimes it takes crap photos.
