I am connected to the wireless router in my house on both my apple macbook and Samsung Note 4, Android 5.0. I run speedtest.net on the mac and its like 90MBs download. I run the app on my note 4 and its like 7MBs. Why?

Welcome to Android Central! It can depend on a number of factors. How far are you from the router? Speed drops off as you get farther away from the router. Also, are you sure Speedtest is using the same server for each test? Different servers can yield different speeds.

Is the router dual band? The 5 GHz band can yield faster throughput, and therefore faster download speeds in the right situation. In addition, the 2.4 GHz band can have more congestion from nearby routers (from neighbors), which can slow things down--so if the Note 4 was on the 2.4 GHz band and the Macbook was on the 5 GHz band, that might explain the discrepancy.

Also run a test on the Mac, then one on the phone, then one on the Mac ... etc., for 10 tests on each. Then average the Mac speeds and average the phone speeds. (I've gotten a 2mbps speedtest download on my desktop, then a 20mbps download immediately after - the path between the server and my router was clogged during the first one, which means it was the internet acting normally.)

And a phone will be slower - 90mbps is a bit fast for the hardware in any phone.

I should clarify my previous statement, per our resident tech wizard Rukbat's suggestion. The raw data speed for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands should still be the same in an isolated environment. But since the 2.4 GHz band can be more congested than the 5 GHz band, there is more potential for data speeds on the 2.4 GHz band to be slower.
