    Hey guys and gals,

Long story short, I cleaned my phone with Goof Off heavy duty wipes before realizing what I was cleaning it with. I cleaned the entire phone (screen, sides, backing). I cannot post links yet; however, the wipes can be found on the home depots website.

It was a really dumb mistake and it seems like the wipes are pretty hazardous even to one's health.

I wiped it down with paper towels and water; however, do you believe that there is anything I should clean it with? I do not want to be using a phone with carcinogens and hazardous materials on it >_<

Also, I understand that this just ate through the oleophobic coating. Could these wipes have damaged anything else?

At this point I am not sure if I should just purchase a new device all together or just purchase a tempered glass screen protector and be okay with it. My main concern is the health standpoint - is it safe to use the phone after the factory coating has been worn off?

I would clean with some alcohol to get the residue off.

Once the residue has been wiped off, it's like it was never there, in regards to health issues. As far as the oleo coating, can't help you with that. Does the glass look awful now? If it doesn't, just relax and use your phone.

I use Goo Gone or Goof Off, and the one I use stinks! I hate the smell and use it only when necessary. Then I try to remove all traces of it to avoid the odor. I almost never use it in the house because of the smell, so I take the item into my shop for cleaning. I wouldn't want to use wipes with a bare hand, btw. I use the product from a bottle.

Yeah, unfortunately I used it with a bare hand as well with a cut on my finger.

On the brightside, it seems like the heavy duty wipes are not as toxic as the professional grade goof off that comes in a bottle. Is that what you were referring to dave?

What made you think this was OK to use on a phone?

We usually have Clorox wipes under the sink (which I now know I probably should not use on a phone either) and I used these goof-off wipes by mistake. It was not until later that I realized what it was.

I just use alcohol and a cotton ball to clean off mine.

The little residue that would remain on the phone from any of these products is not particularly hazardous. A general wipedown with a slightly damp cloth should do.

Thank you Nate. That is helpful. I was just concerned because this is a device you use throughout the entire day, put up to your face, etc...
