Help, can't connect to my school wifi anymore; stuck at "Obtaining IP address..."

I got my Note 4 in November and I've been able to connect to my school wifi no problem up until recently. It requires a username and password which I've already put in but as it's trying to connect, it says "Obtaining IP address..." like usual but it just gets stuck there for about a minute. After that, a window pops up saying "AP currently not in use. Internet connection slow." But it isn't slow because the bandwidth I've tried hitting retry multiple times but nothing seems to work. Also tried forgetting the network. Tried restarting the phone countless times as well. My laptop as well as friends' laptops have no issue as well as friends' phones.

I've also tried the method of making the IP address static and inputting the IP address from my computer (that's already connected to the school network) rather than DHCP and although that shows that I'm connected, the internet doesn't seem to work at all.

I doubt it's an issue with the school wifi because everyone else doesn't seem to have any problems. I don't know what could be wrong with my phone because it can connect to other wifi networks no problem.

At this point I feel like the only solution would be to factory reset but I can't afford to do that. Some help on this would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

EDIT: I was even able to use the free wifi offered at Pizza Pizza.

EDIT 2: I forgot to mention that this is university wifi, not highschool. So it's not limited like highschool networks.

Two thoughts:

Can you find anyone else with a Note 4 or at least a SGS5 or S6 and see if they can successfully connect to the that same SSID?

Have you tried opening Chrome or another browser once you start the process to see if you get re-directed to a walled-garden or captive-portal by the Wi-Fi system? Laptops and BYOD phones / tablets are often treated an 'onboarded' differently by Wi-Fi authentication / Guest systems/

My girlfriend has the S5 and she can connect no problem. I've tried going on chrome to google.ca and it still doesn't work. The login process is actually done in the wifi settings rather than a portal through a website.

Forget the network then try clearing the cache.

To wipe the cache partition, follow these steps:
1. Turn the device off.
2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time:
• Volume Up key
• Home key
• Power key.
3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power and Home key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key.
4. Continue holding the Volume Up key until the Android System Recovery menu displays and then release. This step may take several seconds.
5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight 'wipe cache partition.'
6. Press the Power key to select.
7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, 'Reboot system now' is highlighted.
8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Will that affect anything else on my phone?

My girlfriend's S5 can connect no problem. Also, the login info is entered in the wifi settings rather than a portal on a browser.

I think WIFI connections get corrupted! Delete or forget the connection and start over with a new scan and connect and password. It worked for me a while back!

Re: Help, can't connect to my school wifi anymore; stuck at "Obtaining IP address..."

Entering the same static IP that your laptop has may cause confusion on the network side, particularly if your laptop is powered on at the time your Note 4 is on. A duplicate IP address will be seen on the network and your laptop.

You may want to contact your school's IT Support team for help. If there is still a residual duplicate IP address with different MAC addresses floating around in the school network, that could still be causing some strange issues.

The school DHCP servers may also still have a record for your phone. That may/may not be contributing, depending upon how the DHCP records for hostname/MAC address/IP address for your Note 4 are configured. Good that you're trying all options to troubleshoot and fix the problem, though.

If the IT department can't fix it, does that just mean I'm [language removed] out of luck?

Let's hope not. The fact that your Note 4 was able to connect to the school WiFi before means there is hope and potential.

Re: Help, can't connect to my school wifi anymore; stuck at "Obtaining IP address..."

I get that error at work when I try to connect to the wifi. But I know they have blocked all device IPs that were not issued by the IT Dept. Either they blocked your IP by accident or on purpose. If you were torrenting they would block it if you weren't doing anything sketchy then its either a mistake or maybe you pissed someone off and they blocked you or someone haked the wireless and blocked IPs to mess with people.

Out of curiosity, is there a reason you dont want to factory reset? You can back up all your apps and personal files using kies and reinstall everything once you reset.. you dont lose anything ive done it multiple times as I am rooted and keep swaping ROMs.

I suppose I could factory reset but if I need to root my phone, I have no idea how to do that. I don't know much about Android even though I have one.

Re: Help, can't connect to my school wifi anymore; stuck at "Obtaining IP address..."

i've had that problem before the issue is the network for some reason it's not releasing your ip address so no matter how many times you add or delete it's stuck with the old ip address. Only way to resolve this is for someone to get into the network and remove your ip address which that is not going to happen. The other alternative factory reset which will create a new ip. It's really crappy but those are your only 2 option.

To use Kies you do not need to be rooted. Just download it install on your laptop then plug your phone via USB kies will see it and you can back up everything.

Then factory reset let everything upload and update and plug back in to restore your back up.

When you used to be able connect to the WiFi could you go anywhere or was your connection filtered? For example were you blocked if you tried to go to playboy or something most schools would block? I work in a schools IT department so I might have an answer for you based on your answer to that question

Do you know anyone else trying to connect with a note 4? Are they able to connect?

Yes, I was able to go on anything, even porn. I went to the IT department and the guy gave me some suggestions but none of them worked. He also has a Note 4 and can connect without any issues.
