Galaxy Note 4: Will Not Automatically Switch from Wifi to Mobile Data

T-Mobile has told me (see chat below) that in 5.0.1 Samsung deliberately turned off the ability to switch from wifi to mobile data automatically when you leave the range of a wifi network. This can't be true, is it?

T-Mobile: We have received your information and will connect you with a T-Mobile Chat Specialist soon.
Reiner V: Hi, Luke.
You: Hello
You: Sorry, should have been clear, I have a Galaxy Note 4
Reiner V: Thanks for that accurate description of what is happening with the phone. I do understand that your phone can automatically connect to mobile data even wifi mode is on when you leave the range of your wifi signal. However, Samsung have decided that with this update to disable this so that the phone;s mobile data connection will be optimized.
You: So i have to manually turn off wifi every time I leave the house?
Reiner V: This was the intent of this design. You however, are most welcome to voice out your comments and suggestions with this latest software update with Samsung. The greatest room in this world is the room for improvement. I absolutely agree with you that the phone should be able to connect to our data without the hassle of turning the wifi off.
Reiner V: I express my sincerest apologies for the inconvenience, T-Mobile does not have any control with software updates.
You: Is there any documentation on this "feature?"
Reiner V: What our engineers do is to make sure it is compatible with our network however, we don't have any access on its design.
Reiner V: Please, see <link removed because it wouldn't let me> for the general details of the latest software update.
Reiner V: Your follow up question is more than welcome, Luke. Do you have any in mind?
You: Can you point me to where on that page it specifically says that automatic switching to mobile data is no longer possible?
Reiner V: This page does not have that info.
Reiner V: The details on this page are the general changes from the update.
Reiner V: It describes the wifi passport.

I have this feature (also tmobile customer ) and it works perfectly. It may be... MAY be... because I also have the free tmobile wireless router.

Perhaps your techie didn't understand or he/she is new, but I don't manually have to do anything... it works automatically.

(I'm also running lollipop. )

It looks like wrong info, this works fine for me with Tmobile, it's standard for phones to support this. You may have to be completely out of range.

The Tmobile stand on this completely defeats the reason for having a "smartphone". That would be similar to using a laptop on Wifi at home then plugging in a 3g dongle when out of range. Think the Tech had the story by the tail.
Switching here in the dark Continent works seamlessly.

Re: Galaxy Note 4: Will Not Automatically Switch from Wifi to Mobile Data

I eventually just contacted Samsung support. They had me do a 'wipe cache partition' from the recovery menu. This actually worked, but then it went back to being a problem. I've just done it again, so hopefully it sticks. If not, I may have to do a factory reset.

To be clear, I can be 10 miles from a wifi network that I've used before and it won't work until I turn airplane mode on/off

This is a crazy problem. Did you try a factory reset yet?

Re: Galaxy Note 4: Will Not Automatically Switch from Wifi to Mobile Data

I did a factory reset and it didn't work, at least not after I installed my apps. The only thing I can think is that Nova Launcher is causing a problem, but I'm not sure I'm willing to go without it.

Interestingly if I wipe the cache partition it works for a day or two and then go back. I wish I could figure out a way to just schedule a cache partition wipe every night.
