it used to ask for fingerprint - now it wants that passward but I don't know

Bring the phone and a photo ID proving that it's yours to your carrier and ask them to please unlock it for you.

When you set it up for fingerprint reading, you should have been asked for a password as a backup. It has probably fallen back to that password because someone tried their fingerprint on your phone too many times.

If you do not remember that password, your best bet is a factory reset. You can try going to your carrier, but I don't think many of them provide an unlock service, because it would be too easy for someone to pretend to be you and get the phone unlocked, and the whole idea of passwords is that your data is secure.

you probably will have to wait a set amount of time and then you should be able to re-swipe your fingerprint.
