Odd behavior of deleted emails

Emails that are trashed and deleted are returning to my Inbox in the Verizon stock app. Also, the number of emails in Trash shows a much higher number on the page that lists all the folders than on the Trash emails listing itself. Why are these not the same and what has gone wrong?Thanks. Frank.

Who's your email provider? Are you using the POP3 or IMAP server? If you're using POP3, I would strongly consider switching to IMAP--read here to find out more: IMAP vs POP3. What you're experiencing wouldn't happen on IMAP.
