I'm attempting to back up my contacts onto google (Had issues with my phone and didnt back up and lost many contacts). I read that you need to go to your contact settings and click on "import/export contacts" but every time I click to import to Google it gives me a pop up message saying "No vCard files have been found in your device storage."

I know my contacts are saved directly on my phone and not my sim or sd card. So any idea why I would get this message?

You need to EXPORT or Move the contacts. Not sure what the Contacts app looks like on the Note 4, but on the newer devices you have to go into your Contacts' Settings and select MOVE DEVICE CONTACTS TO.
