When my laptop is on and I go into my music app (stock), there's no songs showing. What do I have to do to be able to play the songs from my laptop on my phone? Thanks.

Unless the songs are on the internal memory of the phone, the music player will not see the files to play. Your PC, however, can, since the phone is connected as an external media storage device, but not the other way around.

Now, there are apps that allow you to access media libraries over WiFi (Media Sharing) but that requires your PC to be set up to share the library over wireless networks.

It's worked before, so the update to Marshmallow must have fudged it up. There is a tab that said nearby devices and my songs showed up.

Ok, so you're using Media Library sharing. That should still be there. I haven't tried it on my Tab S (closest thing to a Note 4 ROM I have) but I can try tonight when I'm home. I've used it before but that was way before the Marshmallow update.
