Messaging app - screen on

Is there a way to stop the screen from turning on every time I get a text message? I'm using the stock message app and not the one Verizon bundled.

I think disabling the popup notifications/message preview is what fixes that.

Yes I remember there being a setting in message+. I don't remember the specifics but I remember there being two options

The option to turn off pop up display is there but even disabling it doesn't work. It's the same on the S6 also, the only way to stop the screen from coming on every time you get a text is to use a different sms app or root your phone or turn power saver on.
