I've read a few reviews for the Note 5 that the audio from the speaker isn't that good, often sounding high pitch and tinny. In terms of listening to a podcast, voicemail or the odd you tube video is it okay ?

It's ...okay. Certainly not one of the better features of this phone. Apple, Moto and HTC run circles around Samsung when it comes to speaker quality.

It's not a deal breaker, because the speaker works well enough (unless you jack the sound up, and then it's pretty bad), but could be much better.

I use mine frequently as a speakerphone and it is perfectly fine for that.
For music / podcasts / etc... I use either a BT speaker or headphones.

It's going to depend on what you like to listen to. The speaker sound quality is perfectly fine with my note 5, and while it isn't as full and rich as listening to my Music Hall 7.1 turn table through my Jolida pre pro it is agreeable enough for what it designed to accomplish. You can always use a good equalizer like Power Amp to take the edges off of how it sounds

To get the most out of it invest in a good set of cans or ear buds and not worry about it too much. No smartphone is ever going to be as good as a dedicated music system regardless of how many tiny speakers or their position on the phone it has... All will be a little bit louder than others and the Note 5 is pretty loud.

Absolutely not! N5 has a much better speaker than the previous N4. N5 isn't the best, but it's much improved and in a different location than the N4. If I had to say what speaker is the best I would say in this order:

    1) HTC M9, M8, M7
    2) Nexus 6 (Motorola)
    3) iPhone / (Note 5 - about the same, if not)
    4) Note 5

No mobile speaker can touch HTC as of yet.

I heard this when I was switching from my 6+ and laughed when I got my Note 5. Cannot tell the difference between the two.

Not bad at all. Definitely better then the Note 4. Close to or on par with the iPhone 6 I had.

I think my speaker is blown and only had it for 3 weeks. Samsung says I have to send it to them to fix it and that takes almost 2 weeks! I can't be without a phone for a day (work) let alone 2 weeks

For speakerphone and quick youtube videos it works great. For music and movies, the headphone jacks works perfectly. After all, it's a phone not a p.a. system.

Coming from the HTC M7 the external speakers sound tinny and awful. Audio through the headphones on the other hand is amazing to my ears , better than the HTC M7.
