Noticed this new tab in settings after the the new update (I'm assuming it came with the new one, because I can't remember seeing it there before).
Does anyone know how effective this is? If I set it to "always optimizing" will it clear my ram often, or what will this do?

I don't see the "App optimization" option in Battery settings. What Android version do you have?

I have App optimization menu too that I think came with the most recent update. I also noticed the addition of Gear VR Service, Gear VR SetupWizardStub and Gear VR Shell which I have just now disabled using Package Disabler Pro.

5.1.1. The update was a very recent one. I don't think the version number changed though.

This came to me (920L in Korea) with the OJ1 update about 6 weeks ago, we are on OJ4 now. I noticed a small improvement to battery life so far. I made a post about it a while back.

Here's a screenshot from my phone if it helps. Incremental updates do not change Android version but maybe Kernal version and Build number changes I'm not sure.

Until someone makes a post detailing the proper use of 'App optimization' I am keeping mine Off and the entire Smart Manager app Disabled. the process of optimization uses processor cycles which in turn uses battery power. I'm already getting excellent battery time from Package Disabler Pro and turning off Background Data (only have 3 apps that require this to be enabled namely Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger and Google Calendar). Not all new features make sense. I guess what Samsung needs to fix (without rooting) is the reported 'RAM management' issues.

Mine is set to auto optimize. And I actually see a difference in battery life. It's much better now. After 3 days of not using an app it automatically starts optimizing it. I think it's a good addition

I have the N920i International Note 5 on AT&T here in the US and I just got this feature in an update for 5.1.1 too. Without changing any battery settings they were all set to "automatically optimizing" So I am not sure what the best settings would or should be.

Here is the description of how it works. TMO and Sprint are getting this update today.
