Samsung Pay - Does NOT work with these Card Readers???

Just added a Citi Card to my new Note 5's Samsung Pay account. Really excited. Then went to Fedex Kinkos and tried it but sadly (with several employees curiously watching) and it did not work. Does Samsung Pay not work with any of these kinds of card readers? It was one of those swiping machines where you swipe from right to left (or left to right I suppose if you wanted) instead of the common ones that you swipe downward. I tried about 10 times placing the phone at various places over the card swiping area with no luck. Sad. I've read Post Offices won't work with Samsung Pay either although I haven't tested it but I believe they have the same right to left card reader.

See the pic below of the card reader at Fedex Kinkos that did not work. :(

NOTE: Right after I went to a gas station and used it and it worked on their (downward swiping) card reader immediately so it does work. Just not on side swiping card readers? Or specifically this card reader at Fedex Kinkos maybe? Anyone know?

If it does work, whats the trick?

It looks that terminal is EMV chip compatible. They may have it set up so that you have to insert your card if the card is one of the new chip embedded cards.

The front slot at the end is a chip reader or whatever, BUT it's broken (the guy said) so the main swipe is the one above the keypad. Just a normal side swipe card reader, not sure why it wouldn't work. I ended up paying with my card which does have a chip and it swiped normally.

I can confirm that it does work on card readers that go left to right. just like the one pictured above. Although it's not at FedEx

Interesting.

Wonder if I did something wrong. I put the phone down flat on top of this card reader just above the keypad with the back of the phone that card slot and it beeped and my card on the phone showed a check mark, but then the guy showed "card declined" on his monitor. I went across the street to a gas station and it worked immediately first try. Hmmm.

I do it at FedEx all the time and at USPS (same one )... problem is that it's not just left to right and right to left but It has TWO magnetic heads. So, when using the phone both heads pick up and you get an error. What i do it turn the phone sideways by the keypad and bring it in slowly trying to get within reach of the first reader. Works every time.

What's interesting to me is that I've never got a check mark when paying with the phone. It just works and I get a receipt on the phone instantly.

Really?! I'll have to try that. Although, I've read your description of how you do it about 10 times and I'm not sure I totally get your method. You turn the phone literally sideways with the power button facing down as if you were gonna tap the side of the reader with the back of your phone? The whole time? And then what? Go over the keypad slowly approaching the top of the keypad? As if you're sliding it along the 0 then the 8 then 5 then 2? And how close to that keypad? Are you hovering just over those keys or are you at the height of the slot where the card is swiped left to right? And finally you mentioned getting it within reach of the first reader...what/where is the "first reader"?

I know I'm over-thinking it here but I'm at this Fedex all the time for work and would love to use Samsung Pay there. Thanks so much!

As for the check mark, it popped up real quick on the top of the image of the credit card. I didn't see it on the gas station purchase but then again my phone that time was sideways and out of view as I tapped the side of that card reader. So I'm not sure about that one.

You need to get the back of the phone to the first magnetic head without the second reader(head) picking up on the phone. I just move the phone in slowly along the keypad till it picks it up. If I get an error I back it up a little and it works. I also go there everyday for work. So I just stood there playing with it. Trying every way till I got it working every time.

Awesome! I'll definitely try that. Thanks for the pic and description. I think I get it now. So I'm now actually 1 for 3 using this. Sadly I went to a Starbucks today and when I pulled out my phone they said "oh we don't have it set up for Apple pay or whatever" I smiled thinking it was just like the commercial. Most Starbucks near me have the NFC reader but this one was a bit far away (not that you need an NFC reader anyway). Since I wasn't 100% sure given I was only 1 for 2 prior to this, I hesitantly said "I think this should still work, it's a Samsung thing" The card swipe was on her monitor and I sort of held up my phone to it really quick but then pulled it away after like one second because I felt like I was being invasive reaching over the counter when they were saying it wouldn't work. So really, I wouldn't maybe count it as a fail. And she might not have even been ready on her screen to accept the swipe anyway. So I'll say I'm still 1 for 2 and I'll stop by that Fedex on Monday and see if I can play around some more. The guy there is a nice guy who doesn't mind me trying over and over and there's not a line like there was in Starbucks so I won't feel bad about playing around.

Thanks again for your help.
