I do not have auto brightness on, I do not have power saver mode on. All of a sudden, mine and my wife's Note 5's started doing this. At total random, while using the phone, doing whatever, it goes all the way, dim, then back up to where I keep the brightness set, which is half way.

Anyone else seen this and know of a fix?

If you have adaptive display on, it will do that.... Look in display settings

Wow, I thought I was going crazy! I had my Note 5 since Aug 2015. Never had a problem. Got the Note 7 this Aug. After the two recalls, went back to my N5, and it wouldn't stay connected to calls, so I had it replaced. My first replacement did this odd dimming/brightening, but it also overheated and wouldn't charge fully. Had that replaced a few days ago. Now this one is doing it (the random dimming/brightening, not overheating)!

VZW is sending another on Thur so if what the TS rep is suggesting doesn't work, I'll have that one available to swap. She wants me to first run my current N5 in safe mode for a few days to see if it happens. If so, then to factory reset it & reinstall everything manually. (I've made all of my Note 5 > N7 > N7 > N5 > N5 > N5 switches using Smart Switch.)

I greatly appreciate her helpfulness, but I am soooooo freaking tired of setting up phones these past few months!

Odd. Had my note5 for a while now and have yet to experience this problem here. Not sure if different variants are affected of if it's all of them but mine certainly has not had any issues like described here.

I've given up with working with Verizon personnel. You're not going to like this but as problems arise (and that's been more frequent recently) I do a factory reset. If that doesn't work I do another factory reset. 4 in the last 3-4 weeks. Sorry to be a bummer. On the positive side, it's been a good phone without lag.

I'm AT&T, which likely disqualifies me from this exact issue - BUT - my Brightness quirk concerned the Settings Bar Not Affecting the Brightness.
No matter where I touched the bar it was still Dim.
I Touched the Auto-Brightness button, then turned it back Off (as usual) , & the Brightness Settings Control started working again.
I'm probably the only one on the planet with this issue but you never know.
    FYI for a similar Searcher.

If u have ur brightness maxed it will do that dimming and brightening thing.. when turning ur brightness up u will notice it going from blue to orange as u reach the max brightness .. just slide it back a little till it is blue and not orange. Even with adaptive display on this works..
