My note 5 with the charger and cord I bought from Verizon is terrible! The cord got so hot that it started to turn gray and then burned through it and I now have exposed wires. Not cool when they're so expensive. My bf said to throw away the cord that came with it, but I think I should take it to the Verizon store I purchased it from. Advice please

I'd at least bring it back and ask them if they can do something for me - like plug in one of their chargers. And if that gets hot, they should replace the phone. (But I wouldn't bet on it.)

If the Note 5 is overheating, it's a short somewhere in the phone. If it's just the cord, it could be a defective cord, and a cord from a dollar store would work as well. (I have a house full of cords, and they all work - from $1 "junk" to a $15, 10 foot commercial cable.)

There was a thread somewhere but I can't find it. Some original cables have become hot, but I don't know about it getting as far as yours.

Mine got hot as well. Changed cables and it's fine. I also have a 10 foot cable bought at Walmart and it has never got hot.

Cables getting so hot that the insulation melts usually mean a dead short (circuit)! Your device drawing so much current that it's melting the wire is a cause for serious concern. Extending the cords just means a higher resistance is limiting the current flow (and dropping the voltage) resulting in cool cabling. If another cable melts, it means the short is in the device. If not, it was in the cable...

Definitely go back to the Verizon store.
I wouldn't use 3rd party cables. You can void the warranty on your device.
