in the past week, I've experienced a sudden and massive battery drain .. my phone goes from a reported 50ish % to zero in a matter of minutes. In both cases, I've been using the stock camera. The culprit doesn't seem to show up in the list of apps using battery, as the % would be more immense than I see.

Symptom is sluggish camera response followed by dead phone. Then I look @ the battery usage chart and it shows gradual decline then a cliff where it went from say 65% to 0% immediately.

Any suggestions for tracking this down? I think the battery reported % is ok and it's really that soemthing killed id (vs. really having little battery left and the report being inaccurate?). My note 5 is about 2 years old so I think (??) the battery is still ok.

Drain that fast is suspicious for a failing battery (like with a battery dendrite). Does it always happen, or are there other times when the battery drain is normal?

mostly normal.. happened 2x in the past two weeks. phone is about 2 years old.

Interesting thing is that Android charts the drain.

Battery drain screen shot. Note audio server which I first suspected of large battery drain 3 weeks ago as it had the highest percentage and my drain was abnormally very high (but not massively sudden). That seems to have settled but I still see audio server and not sure why as large as it still is (no media usage on my part).

There might be a corrupt media file saved somewhere -- consider backing up all of your audio and video files, and then deleting them from the phone.

That steep drop is still highly suspicious for a dendrite. You can read a little bit more here: Battery Life and How To Improve It

thanks, I suspected a corrupt media file when I saw the audio server high usage but it settled itself in 2 days, not sure how yet. I'll check your link, thanks.
