Is there an unlocked variant of the new Galaxy Note 7? I knew I had to wait months before an unlocked s7. I own a Galaxy Note 3 working fine on Straight Talk. When I get the money for a Note 7, will there be an unlocked version?

If you pay full price it can be unlocked.

There are international versions, but many things to consider. No warranty, no service and then to make sure you can get LTE among a few things.

    All Verizon phones are unlocked.

Going by the trend of S7, we can expect to see the us unlocked Note 7 (N930U) 3 months after release(November maybe). I assume the reason you are looking for unlocked is to not have carrier crap if yes then you have to wait for the US unlocked model to release or import the N930F which has few limitations (search around).

If all you care is sim unlocked phone and don't mind carrier firmware then you can buy the carrier models at full price and request unlock code or Verizon model is unlocked out of the box as required by FCC.

Right now we were told there are no plans in place for a North America unlocked and unbranded Note 7.

So, basically, "We have nothing to share at this time" but in a more polite way.

If it were me, I'd buy a T-Mobile model, get them to unlock it, then disable as much of the crap as you can. You'll still have to wait on T-Mo for updates, but they have the least amount of stuff you can't disable from what I'm told. There's also a janky root method using Sprint pre-release test files out there that works on the T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T version if you wanna go that way. This way you get a phone that works on every GSM network in North America, and will work for calls and at least 3G data everywhere in the world that's not Verizon or Sprint or some goofy network in Russia.

An international unlocked model is going to be missing some LTE bands for North America and (especially on T-Mobile) will revert to 3G in a few places. If you're good with that, B&H supposedly is getting them in a week or so, and they are great with warranty claims (personal experience). I'm sure other people have other suggestions as well.

That's a bummer that they have no plans as of now... Thinking about it the S7 and S7 edge US unlocked models are still on May security patch and looks like they don't even bother. Support has no clue that this model exists even (not surprising) and their answer is check with your carrier

I can see why they aren't ready to sell unlocked yet (I disagree but I understand lol)

The Note isn't cheap to build. Waiting to measure the success of the S7 and S7e unlocked versions before building a few million Note 7s is a smart business decision. If patents and assorted stupidity from some other company that starts with Q and ends with ualcomm weren't an issue, they could just make one model for the world and sell carrier versions and unlocked versions.
