If carriers cancel sales of Note 7's does that mean they'll abandon future updates for those who decide to keep theirs?

If they stop supporting the phone all together I'm going to be forced to trade it in. It may never get Nougat

My guess is that as long as the phone is not recalled, updates will be provided. That said, I am not an expert, so don't quote me

OS and security updates should continue. it's close enough to the s7 to keep it consistent. N7 specific updates may lag though.

They won't if they are recalling them because of safety issues. They most likely will shut them down on users if they don't return them.
