Can anyone explain to me why there are still so many Note 7
phones for sale on eBay as of today? (from highly reputable
sellers... even ones I've dealt with in the past)

For the life of me, I can't guess why anyone is still selling
    them?(more important.. buying them?)

    Thanks!

Probably still for sale because no one is buying them.

Probably due to the recent news on replacement phones exploding like the original. They probably want to sell it just in case the Note 7 is recalled again and/or banned from being sold. However, because of all the issues, nobody is even buying them.

Samsung hasn't recalled or asked retailers to stop sales of the 'replacement' Notes. Those who have have done so on their own volition due to the recent fire reports.

what scares me is that based on the description of some
of the Note 7 auctions, I get the feeling that the users have
no idea there's even a recall.

Guess that shouldn't be surprising, since nobody(Samsung,
Verizon) never notified me via text, phone call, email or anything....
if I'm one of those people who don't pay attention to the news
or read stuff on Android Central, I would not have known about
    the recall at all.

If it's an auction then the responsibility lies within the buyer. You're not buying from an authorized, official outlet. Then you're responsible for what you're buying and bidding for. In those cases I wouldn't even be sure if it's a replacement unit.

And I'm sorry, but all carriers did notify their users via text and e-mail. IF you got the phone via carrier. If not, unless you registered your product with Samsung, there's no way for them or the store to contact you. Then, just like any other recall, you do have to be aware of the news.

    that brought back sad memories....

I did not find out about September 11 attacks until 3 weeks later.
I was on vacation in the Maldives and didn't bother checking the
news or anything. It was only when I landed in Paris for my
connecting flight back to Chicago that I saw it on a magazine at
the newsstand.(again, this was 3 weeks after 9/11) I almost
freaked out when I picked up that magazine.(Der Spigel).

As far as I know, there is no recall on the "safe" units, and investigations are still pending.

Yup, no official recall on those yet. FAA still claims the flight ban doesn't apply to recalled units. HOWEVER, airlines are free to implement their own bans, and from what I've experienced, they're not taking chances (or bothering to train their staff to recognize 'replacement' units) and are just asking all Note 7s to be turned off.

Maybe it's the people that received 2 or 3 phones, so they're selling their extras.
