I have serious Google fanboy cred. I love the Google-verse, I am all in and have been so from the start, I crave the pure Android experience and have owned Androids from the start, I've owned Nexus and Pixel devices and I've helped Google with the development of Chrome OS. Safe to say, I am an offensive Google lover, and for the most part, I dutifully hate most everything that doesn't have a G on it.

But, a couple of years back I went AWOL and bought a Note 5. OMG - that thing was amazing. The design, build, features and that display - I was sold. Of course I made it look as much "Google" as I could and ran as many Google apps as possible. Curiously, since I pay attention to my phone and maintain it, it didn't have any experience any "Samsung Lag", like none. That N5 was a screamer. It led me to automatically to pre-order an N7, and we all know about that fiasco. I ran for the hills and was into a Pixel XL on day one.

The Pixel was a mix - I loved my return to the "pure Android experience", and the fast updates, kind of. But, for many Pixel owners, BT just didn't work, and Google could never figure it out. As with many Pixel owners, I went a year without enjoying reliable BT, and this was 2016/2017? With all of my Google love paid into the G Bank, they wanted nothing to do with those of us who had BT issues, except to give you another Pixel with broken BT. Very poor "pure Google experience".

So, move up a year and I am all in on the Pixel 2 XL - I pre-ordered like a dutiful Google fanboy and man, what a mistake. I ran head-long into the Pixel 2 XL Displaygate. I can't believe that Google released such a crappy product and at such a premium price tag. Sure, Google is trying to do their best at damage control, and they will probably push-out an update to fix one maybe two of the issues, but I don't believe that display will be "right" for a $1000 phone. This really sucks. I was going to pay a premium price for a phone that Google promised would be fixed - maybe just like they fixed BT in the past year. Sure, I love so much about Google, but I would have felt like a stooge to stay in that pre-order line. I bolted.

Enter the N8. This is where the sacrilege begins...

The N8 is in a different league than Pixel phones. The design is crazy beautiful, the build quality is exceptional, the software usability has been refined, the performance is blistering, and the display - OMG, the display is another order of magnitude from anything Google has ever offered.

What about the horrible Samsung lack of updates? I am here to tell you that Google's constant updates, in real life, are actually quite annoying with some apps being updated so often, I am digging through the update logs daily to try to figure out what has improved with each release, and it's almost never of any importance. This sounds like heresy, but Google's updates are quite oversold IMO. Sure, some security updates have benefit, but that's not the issue I am talking about here.

What about the horrible Samsung lag that eventually happens over time with all of their phones? How about we step-up and understand the impact of loading down our phones with crap apps and learn something about keeping our phones running well? Also, how about we talk about a subject that is relevant in 2017 and not 2012? Samsung has smartly scaled-down their apps, and it's just so simple to make sure things stay minimal. The performance benefits are amazing. I have never experienced any "lag" with my past Notes, and this N8 is stupid fast. And BTW, my Pixel could get bogged-down as well, but with a bit of TLC, I kept that phone running fast as well.

From being a Google fanboy that prefers Samsung phones, to questioning the real-life benefits of fast/frequent updates to not buying into guaranteed Samsung lag, there's lots of Google sacrilege here.

But man, did I mention that the N8 is incredible? I am soooo happy to be out of the Pixel world and back to a Note.

You echoed my exact thoughts. Same as you, I was a die hard Google fan. But it Google wants the reputation its trying to achieve, being the king of android, it has to give us the best hardware too. Or price its phones way less than 1k. I'm actually glad the display gate issues popped up because i wouldn't have gone in to even look at the phone in person before buying it. And thankfully the n8 was right there in the same store. There is just no comparison in the build quality of these 2 phones. So I've set my n8 up just like my pixel xl, with the superior screen!

Does the fingerprint scanner placement and Bixby button bother you?

I have the original Pixel, and think the fingerprint scanner placement in the center works well. The Bixby button seems like it would be an annoyance, and I'm not sure if I want to invoke that accidentally.

How does the new form factor (tall and narrow) compare to the Note 5 (I had this one) and the original Pixel?

Hey Trees,
The placement of fingerprint scanner on the N8 is a non-issue for me. Took just a minute to re-train myself. But, dry skin on my fingers makes all scanners a little unreliable - it was exactly this way on my Pixel XL and all previous phones. So, I don't use never used them 100% of the time. Thankfully, facial recognition and iris scanning is there for me. I use facial recognition and it works great.

The Bixby button is fully configurable. I turned it off. No issue there. You can also install a high-rated app that remaps the button to other functions, like Google Now.

The form factor is a delight. Unlike all Pixel phones, Samsung has truly minimal bezels, so it's virtually the same size as many other flagships, but packs a larger display within that form factor. It's a tad thinner and fits in my hand more comfortably than the N5.

As an OG Pixel owner, if you go try the N8 there will be no turning back. The Pixel OG and 2 fall so far short of the N8. Be prepared to buy.

If so, keep in mind that there are great deals out there. For me, I got $200 off automatically from T-Mo (ATT and VZW customers get $250 off at Best Buy). I sold my Pixel for $400. $600 off of the N8 financing leaves just a handful of months of payment, then I'll be done.

Bottom line - the N8 is a killer phone.

Thanks billykac, helps to hear from someone who has used Note 5 and Pixel OG (I remember seeing you around both AC forums). My wife has the Note 8, and is super happy with it. She went through the Note 7 ordeal after moving from the Note 5.

I have the Pixel 2 XL on order, but may cancel. I do miss the S Pen (I used Note 2-5 as Note 1 was not available on Verizon at the time), and the screen to body ratio that Samsung has achieved with recent Notes (N5, 7, 8).

I was (still am) quite happy with the Pixel and was fortunate to not run into the "hollow bar - signal issue", and don't use Bluetooth much (older vehicle without Bluetooth). I do need to get with the times though on that. The fact that the Note 8 has a 3.5mm headphone jack is a bonus as I can use my wired headphones for a bit longer.

I've been holding out for Galaxy S8 Active to get on Verizon, love that battery. Doesn't seem to be happening so I was ready to get a Pixel 2 XL when the holiday deals start flying.

Went to Best Buy yesterday and looked over the flagships. Liked the features of the S8 Active but didn't really wow me. Kind of utilitarian. Seemed like an appliance instead of a piece of high technology.

Looked at Galaxy S8+ as well. Thought it was decent and all but... dunno, didn't grab me. Worried about the curved screen and fragility.

Was kind of underwhelmed by Pixel 2 XL. Blue tint on screen was terrible. I don't think I could ignore it. Felt lightweight in hand, insubstantial. No wireless charging, no headphone jack, pretty much a point-and-shoot camera lacking pro features. (Yes I know a different camera app would fix this.)

And then the Note 8. Wow! Hand feel was fabulous. Beautiful, elegant appearance. The display was incredible! All the hardware goodies were there. Camera loaded with doo-dads. But I do see what people mean by a busy, bloated OS. I've had Moto phones so like the OP I'm accustomed to a minimal OS experience and have avoided even considering Samsung and the hated TouchWiz. If the Note 8 can be made to behave like a minimum Android OS I think I've found my phone.

What about the size? It seems kind of tall. Any problem with pocket fit? I use a front pocket for my phone and nothing else except phone goes in the pocket.

there are enough workarounds for the baked-in bloat that I think you will be happy. ecstatic even. I'm hard to please after the Note 7, and I love it. not out of the box, except for the screen, but now I full-on love it.

Gotta add one thing about the edge apps. I didn't think I'd use it or like it but I really do. Especially how you can set up the edge lighting to glow when notifications come in. There's just a lot of really cool features. I run nova with any phone I get, same as this n8. And I've debloated. Its as close to pure android as I can get and I get all the additional features that just make this a beautiful experience.

I ended my hardcore fanboy days with the demise of the Commodore Amiga, so I'd like to think my views aren't as clouded/skewed as some. I keep trying Google phones, because I like the IDEA of Google-branded hardware/software. Pure speed, Google-backed AI smarts, lack of bloat, etc. Unfortunately in practice it is never realized. On the other hand, Touchwiz and other Samsung bloat has always left me with mixed feelings - some nice extras, but so much duplication, and the lag was always real.

Enter Note 8. Granted, I haven't had it for 6 months so I can say all the lag has been eradicated, but as of right now, this is my first Samsung phone where Touchwiz is a positive in my mind. It has been refined to a point that it actually makes sense, and makes it BETTER than pure Google. The duplicate apps and other bloat are still a mixed bag, but I can genuinely say, my Note 8 is the first phone in a while that makes me excited to use it.

Now give me a 4,500mAh battery, Quad DAC from V30, Oreo 8.1, and I'll be in heaven :)

If you use spotify, having the Spotify Edge is really convenient. I mean the app makes it hard to get to the playlists quickly. You either need Spotify Edge or Sesame shortcuts to get to the playlists fast.

Great to hear these responses - thanks!

Yes, BT = Bluetooth.

This post is my attempt to not only say that the N8 is an awesome alternative to the Pixel 2's, but that someone who actually exists as Google fanboy (me) can shed light on the holy "fast updates" topic that so many of us say is a leading reason to buy a $1000 phone with a poorly designed/manufactured display. In real life, even for many of us Google fanatics, "fast updates" is not such a thing. Certainly nothing to go too far out of your way for.

Plus that misinformed mindset that Samsung phones always fall into "lag", with people saying "just wait for it, it'll happen in 6 months". This is just as outdated as iPhone fanboys saying that Android phones are harder to learn/use - something that actually could have been an valid argument in 2008. But, it's 2017. That "inevitable lag" opinion is really indicative of someone's lack of understanding of current day tech.

Both of these topics are flashpoints for people on forums and discussions in social settings, and especially the "fast updates", which is a topic to which all of us Google fanboys must genuflect.

It would be great for us to see these topics for exactly what they are. And, the N8 is, IMO, an awesome alternative for those of us refugees of the Pixel 2 drama.

I used the edge apps so I can have nothing but pure Widgets on home screens. I put app folders on the Edge Screen and it works great, keeping my home screens neat and clean.

I am OK with Samsung Experience (Touchwiz) on my Note 8 but I really wish we could truly disable the redundant apps (Contacts, Calendar, etc.)
