firmware update for N9500

since my last post on 07-22-2018 02:04 PM, i am still on android 7.1.1

i have the SM-N9500 and according to sammobile.com

it says the latest firmware for SM-N9500 is
--> Hong Kong 2018-08-08 - Version 8.0.0 - N9500ZHU4CRG2 - N9500ZZH4CRG2
--> Hong Kong 2018-07-02 - Version 8.0.0 - N9500ZHU3CRF2 - N9500ZZH3CRF2
--> Hong Kong 2018-05-08 - Version 8.0.0 - N9500ZHU2CRD7 - N9500ZZH2CRD7

i get regular update notification on my phone, yet it still tells to update to firmware 2018-05-08 N9500ZHU2CRD7.

how come it does not give me the latest and greatest firmware 2018-08-08 N9500ZHU4CRG2 ?? or do i need to update to 2018-05-08, then 2018-07-02 then 2018-08-08 in that order??

anyone knows the answer??

On my latest Note 8 (I've bought several, it's an addiction lol) when it picked up the first update it loaded them sequentially. It started out of the box on Nougat and then did many updates until it got to the latest version of Oreo. Can't explain it but that was the behavior of mine.

oh ok. your release date 2018-07-24. was this the third time you updated it because there were two previous release dates android 8.0 for your model were 2018-05-13 and 2018-05-23.

so, am i correct this was the third time you applied the update to get to his firmware.

if so, i could apply the 2018-05-08 first, then 2018-07-02 then 2018-08-08 assuming i get the update notifications for 2018-07-02 and 2018-08-08.

Yes exactly, that’s the way it went for me. I just got this particular phone the first week of July. After initial setup, it picked up the first update and after that update it loaded another, then another. It did not go to the latest and skip any. I should note that all these updates happened through the normal process of being pushed to the phone via the settings software update function. I did not load any of them manually.

thank you for your help. have you noticed any real issues with android 8.0 on your phone?

i am delaying the updates since may because some users have experienced issues. so i am hoping the sequences updates since may would address/fix those issues.

I'm actually on my third Note 8 and I've updated all of them to Oreo. I have not experienced any issues. Some people have but I have not. My experience with Oreo has been a positive one. I do always clear the system cache after updating. Not sure that has made any difference but I always do it out of habit.

it's good to know you have no issues whatsoever after the updates. can you tell me what do you mean by 'clear the system cache' and how you do that in the event i may end up doing the same after updating.

Clearing the system cache is done through a system recovery menu and it just wipes all the cached files from the system memory to give you a fresh start. It does not affect any of your data files. Some people do this regularly, I used to do it monthly but have got lazy on that, but still do it when I think about it. It can be helpful in clearing up system software hiccups. It’s an easy to perform and non-destructive way to trouble shoot potential problems.

To Wipe cache partition
Turn off the device.
Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
When the green Android logo displays, release all keys ('Installing system update' will show for about 30 - 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
Press the Volume down key several times to highlight 'wipe cache partition'.
Press Power button to select.
Press the Volume down key until 'yes' is highlighted and press the Power button.
When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
Press the Power key to restart the device.

thank you very much. i thought people do the 'wipe cache' only when they had issues. i will make a point to do it regularly, especially after each update.
