Why are my gallery photos not being shown in the MMS app?

Alright so, today I just got my Galaxy Note 8 (it was preowned and I got it from Sprint) I backed up my other phone, a Samsung s7 Edge, and sent the info to my new phone. Everything appeared fine, my contacts, apps, and my photos in the gallery were there. I wanted to send a picture to my dad showing the better camera, so I took a picture of myself and was going to send it but it didn't show up in MMS. In fact, no photos were there! I brush it off and download some pictures from pinterest for my background and when I check again, these are the only things in the MMS gallery! My app gallery is fine though, what's going on?

Welcome to Android Central! When you tap the Attach Photo icon in the messaging app, do you get any option to change the location where you choose images from?
