Things I'd like to see (hardware and software) in the Note 9:

    1. Rear centered fingerprint scanner (like Pixel)
    2. No dedicated hardware Bixby button
    3. Shorter/wider form factor, e.g. 16:9 like that on the Note 5
    4. Option to disable Samsung apps I don't want to use without needing a package disabler app
    5. Improve upon the "good stuff" like S Pen, dust/waterproof, camera, facial recognition, etc.
    6. 128 or 256GB internal storage options
    7. 3.5mm headphone jack
    8. Better default keyboard, particularly for auto-correct, etc.
    9. Bixby as an option throughout (ability to turn it off system wide)
    10. Dedicated motion coproccessor/sensor like that found in iPhone (for better step/exercise tracking via S Health, etc.)

Flat screen to eliminate distortion & make phone

Thicker body to facilitate bigger battery.
I would love ir blaster back but I'm the only one I

    Stereo front facing speakers.
Fingerprint sensor in the middle on the back.
Plastic body glass breaks easily & offers no
    advantages

My mobile history: 1990s Ericsson ‘brick’, a few Nokia phones (8390 model), blackberry, iPhone 4S, & Samsung since… Last upgrade was from a Note 5 to 8. Why? In order of importance: Micro SD storage, RAM increase, 18:5:9 edge display, camera.

To answer original post: Future Note Features

    1. Fingerprint sensor. It belongs on the display screen front, embedded underneath the display. The tech exists to do so, and is rumoured to arrive on the Note 9. Sure, centered on rear would help some, but that is semantics… It Belongs on the front. Present location is intuitive if you are right handed and have large hands.

    2. Bixby button. It can stay if it helps some people. The button, and bixby, are both easy to disable. I have no interest in bixby or it's competition from Google or Amazon.

    3. Form factor. 18:5:9 is awesome. I was surprised how strongly I preferred it on my Note 8, vs. 16:9 Note 5. Easier to use. 16:9 would be too big, given the taller Note 8 size…& I don't want to return to a smaller phone.

    4. Samsung apps are already easy to disable with Android 7.1.1. Be mindful some countries do not have Google Play services. Permissions, background data, storage etc, all can be utilized. Sure, in a perfect world every app could be deleted.

    5. Yes. Although I think once the fingerprint sensor is moved to the display front, that will end consumer interest in facial recognition. Govt, like the Chinese, want citizens to get comfortable with facial recognition, where tracking efforts are rapidly expanding. Introducing facial recognition to phones is a first step in getting it more accepted elsewhere in society. I have no interest in facial recognition, my fingerprint is enough. It is laughable… So much research to unlock a phone.... I don't the like facial tracking trend.

    6. Increased internal storage. Yes, 512GB is all but confirmed by Samsung for the Galaxy S9. It will absolutely be on the Note 9. I'd still like to see micro SD storage retained on the Note, as well.

    7. 3.5mm headphone jack. Yes! Music sounds better on premium headphones that have a cord. A cord is also the antenna for local area FM radio reception. Apple got rid of the jack to force wireless headphone upgrades, not improve sound or consumer experience.

    8. Agreed. Samsung keyboard is awful. If Samsung can't get predictive text right, why would I even consider bixby? I use SwiftKey.

    9. Why can't you figure out bixby? Yes, it already can be disabled. In fact, all advanced touchwiz settings (all the gesture settings, etc) can also be disabled.

    10. Health tracking. Personally, I have no interest in biometric functions on a phone. Tracking steps is an obsessive compulsive like curiosity. S heslth is disabled on my phone. Watches are the ideal place for biometric data collection.

    Plus:

lol, never too much RAM. 8 or 10 GB is welcome.

    Battery size.

I don't care if another 3mm was added to the wifth of a Note phone... I want an even longer lasting battery. Not to say the Note 8 is bad... But many use premium phones for nearly all online use... Thus more battery power is always welcome.

North America Market Exynos chip legal problem

The remarkable Samsung Exynos 9 chips were just announced by Samsung January 4th, 2018. The ‘headline feature’ is it can handle 4K video at 120 frames per second. The problem is an agreement with Qualcomm prevents Exynos use in Samsung phones sold in America. Given the benefits of the latest Exynos, it is very important Samsung get out of the awful deal… and is playing out in courts. Rest of the world is guaranteed the Exynos chips in Samsung phones.

    Reply to other comments:

The glass body construction is necessary for wireless charging, and the only reason manufacturers choose it. Wireless charging is also why battery replacement was ended.

I'd argue fast charging via USB cord ended the value of being able to swap out batteries. Continued battery improvement is expected, with dramatic recharging advances coming through research with graphene.

You can still get an aging phones battery replaced in phones. Going to a local repair tech specialist is advised.

Having upgraded to the Note 8 from a 5, I'm very satisfied. Regardless of incremental improvements, I won't be looking for a phone until 5G lte networks are rolled out in 3 or 4 years.

I've owned cell phones for over 25 years. Advances since the advent of smartphones are remarkable, but significant improvements have all but ended. Displays have now reached the limit of human eye sight…. But a true 4K display would be nice for virtual reality, and zooming in on photos.

Good post, NorthernArbiter. I'll save everyone the pain by not quoting it, since it was so long.
I agree with most of your points. However, I doubt they'll make the phone 3mm thicker to accommodate a small segment of users that need longer battery life. With lower energy usage of the processors and quicker charging, it's pretty much negated the need for much bigger batteries.
People always complained about not having stereo speakers. Now that the S9 is supposed to feature this, I'm sure it uses some space inside that takes away from the possibility of a bigger battery. You can't have everything.
I personally don't mind the aspect ratio of the screens now, either. Why everyone wants to go back to a 16:9 is beyond me.

    +120hz refresh

+Faster updates. For these prices, Galaxy S and Note need to be updated faster for os and security updates. I don’t care how they do it. It needs to be a bigger priority.

+ Better cameras. These aren’t cutting it anymore.

    +Stereo Speakers

    +Remappable Bixby Key.

    +Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0

I've got no gripes about the bloat or colors. However to be fair, I don't see how you can achieve water resistance with a removable battery. As for a dedicated camera button, a lot of phones have an option to use the volume keys. That's a fairly niche feature but a good one regardless. The only way you'll ever see a front scanner, is if it's u dear the display like the new Vivo phone.

I was a note 3 user since 2013 and till now my note 3 seem okay, after 5 years of service, then the battery problem kicks in, other than that, it was my great experience.

I just hope my next flagship phone would be the note 9, after 5 years without buying any new phone, now it is time, even though my note 3 still serve me the best.

I really do not know what to suggest anymore, everything is good for me (i mean for the last note 8 specs), maybe just the ratio turn into normal size (like my note 3) and also bezel less.

Either for the 9 or 10 as I believe 9 will be more refinement?

    1. 16x9 ratio but I would like a 7" iPad Mini size as a phone, tablet replacement
    2. Bixby Button- Allow you to either use as Bixby double click for flashlight or program another feature.
    3. Rose Gold color / Blossom Pink color for the USA and not just Asia!
    4. Raise to wake option- turn on phone when you raise the phone.
    5. Use Messenger app as replacement for SMS and make it Android's version of iMessage
    6. Refinement of Camera
    7. Refine Bixby - she is powerful but a little too slow
    8. Refine Samsung Pay- I do use this feature but make it faster and work at gas stations as well.

I would also want to see a female version of the Samsung Gear s3 watch like a nice Rose Gold option to match with the Note 9.

That is it. That is my wishlist!!!!!!!!

like to see and expect are two different things of course but....
    1. dual front camera should be a given since the A8 is getting it.
    2. S9+ camera or better, possibly a triple lens
    3. full front wrap around screen except from top bezel where all the sensors and second speaker are.
    4. stereo speakers... see nr 3
    5. 6.5'' screen.. they have to as Apple are doing it
    6. 512gb SoC with SD expansion for another 512gb to be the first terabyte mobile device
    7. 8gb of RAM since all competitors are now moving to 6gb they will have to if they want to be that TOP DEVICE
    8. S-pen with speaker/microphone (optimistic I know) but would be handy for dictaphone type stuff and possibly other things
    9. that graphene battery technology for great battery life and super fast charging
    10. metal 12 or what it is called but I think it is a given as it is lighter and stronger and they don't want to make it any heavier

    1) A better spec sheet than the S line. Many times I find myself in a situation where I can't choose if to get the latest S series or wait for the Note. And when I wait patiently to get the Note, it has no enormous advantage over the S(except a few things)
    2) A far better camera than the S9. I would like to see adjustable aperture instead of dual. One we can adjust ourself.
3)A better display. Possibly a 4k 120hz 6.5 inch display with even less bezels. Not only would it looks gorgeous but also benefit VR.
    4) A better front camera. Its already great on the Note 8 but I would like to see more from Samsung.
5)Stereo speakers louder and crisper than that of the S9.
    6) A better Android experience. Maybe Samsung's UI is at its best it has ever been, but it is still far from great. It has a good vibe to it. But all those duplicate apps and lack of optimization make it a bad UI.
    7) Probably IP69(maybe it's a far stretch)
    8) Quicker updates. I got the Oreo update on my Note just 2 days ago.
    9) Still have the 3.5 mm jack and still skip the notch.
    10)a larger battery
    11) 256 or 512 GB of UFS storage along with MicroSD support
    12)Few more SPen features.
    13) Support for Qualcomm Fast Charge 4.0
    14)No bixby button
15)Improved facial recognition as well as an improved Iris scanner. A better placement for the Fingerprint scanner as well.

ditch the all glass design, make it a tank like previous Notes!

Yea that is my dream device basically. I doubt they'd add all that.

If I were a billionaire I'd pay to have a phone custom designed just for my specifications. have about 20 of them produced for spares, family etc., and even have a custom designed case for my specifications. It would blow the mass produced phones away. You'd probably have to find one of the Chinese manufacturers to design it.

I love my Note 8, after giving up my Note 7 for the recall, the Note 8 has been the perfect device for me. It does have some drawbacks.

    • Fingerpring sensor on the back is a pain after being used to it on the front
    • Sound/Speakers could be better
    • Faster CPU, hope Sammy can get out of the Qualcom deal
    • More RAM, more internal memory and keep expanded memory
    • Better camera, S9 has real nice low light capabilites
    • Touch Wiz needs a serious makeover

And something unexpected as a "WOW" factor. The competition is getting close in specs. Samsung needs to step up to the plate and surprise us.

At least 128 or 256 GB ram storage, but for some reason they seem hell bent on not releasing higher capacities in the US. Also, the dual speakers that is on the S9 now and better fidelity.

I would love it if they could perfect the fingerprint under the screen.

Also, it won't happen, but would love it if the Exynos chip would one day support the US radios and therefore everyone would be on the same chip.
