Was lucky enough to get the Note 9 today. I noticed that the Wi-Fi Calling was missing as an option on my phone. I used it all the time with my S8 and At&t since I live in a newer condo the walls are extremely sound proof. Unfortunately it also creates a cell signal that makes it very hard to make indoor phone calls so Wi-Fi Calling is a must. Has anyone been able to enable this setting. I tried through apps>system apps and found the program but there was no way to enable it.

You most likely won't get wifi calling on AT&T with an unlocked phone. They don't even allow the Pixel like all the others. AT&T is very very particular and dumb about this.

At&T didn't allow Wifi calling on unlocked phones, very disappointing.

That’s the only reason I still get a AT&T phone is for WiFi calling. I need it. Otherwise I would buy unlocked.

no advanced calling or messages on unlocked ATT. learned this the hard way with my unlocked note 8. I'm happy with att coverage but thought unlocked may be better resale. not anymore. my wife's iPhone unlocked from Apple store and wifi calling works. who knows.

For the Note 8, I noticed wifi calling was disabled after the Oreo update.

    thanks for the updates team.

    edit:

Is there any app out there that would allow me to speak over wifi when taking calls. Google Voice looks like it would have to port my number and cancel my contract with at&t. So far it looks like I can not get texts messages either in my living room. Next phone wont be unlocked unless i move by then.

I'm a little late to this thread; I just found it after searching for the same problem. Unlocked Samsung Note 9, no WiFi calling on AT&T.

I still have an older AT&T Microcell that allows you to route mobile traffic over WiFi. I used it 10+ years ago. We are in the country and had a weak mobile signal at the time.

I just plugged it in and confirmed that it works! I went from 1-2 bars, to 4 bars, on my Mobile signal.

I paid $100 for it years ago. You should be able to pick one up on eBay or similar pretty cheaply. It looks like they sell for $20 to $30 used.

Once installed, If you look under Mobile in Connections on your phone's menu, it should say "AT&T Microcell" when you are connected to it.

Here is an AT&T link about the Microcell:

    https://www.att.com/att/microcell/

I am not paying any fee to use it. I think they used to charge me $5 or $10 per month 10+ years ago?

I was actually using the Microcell until my son left for college a couple of years ago.

Even though it has theoretically been replaced by WiFi Calling, he would often use a lot of mobile data by forgetting to turn WiFi on while streaming video or gaming. The Microcell forced that traffic to WiFi even if he was "supposedly" using mobile data. Huge help with older 15 GB shared plan.

Also, FYI: I had a Verizon (unlocked) Samsung Note 8 before I bought the unlocked Note 9. When they pushed out the Android Oreo 8.0 Over Air Update, they installed the AT&T version of the release software That enabled WiFi Calling on my Note 8.

    Good luck!

    This.

Bought one from eBay 2 years ago and went from 1 bar signal in the house to 5 bars. Works great.

ATT disconnetinued Microcells and they don't sell them anymore. You should be able to get one of eBay though. Follow instructions on ATT for setup when you get the unit. Good luck.

Anyone know if it works with an AT&T prepaid account? On the AT&T Microcell page, it says GoPhone is NOT supported (obviously old and not updated verbiage), but wondering if anyone has still be able to make it work. Thank you!

I don't mean to go off on a tangent, but does Att only restrict unlocked Note 9s from wifi-calling? I just put a Att SIM into an unlocked iPhone xs max and wifi-calling is activated without an issue. However, from everyone's account above - it won't work on an unlocked Note 9?

Apple sets the rules for their phones..
Samsung obeys by the carrier rules.

An unlocked iPhone will work with every major carrier in the US with all of the features (WiFi calling, VoLTE/HD Voice) that the carrier supports.

Samsung? Not so much, support varies by carrier.

That's what I thought at first, but it seemed like Wifi calling would be in control of the carrier. I guess I was wrong. Thanks for the additional clarity!

The nice thing is, because this is a Samsung unlocked Note 9, you can enable WiFi calling by flashing the AT&T firmware onto the phone. It's a very simple thing to do but it's too difficult to explain here. Just go to the XDA Note 9 forums to figure out how to do this.

It's only that carriers firmware that control certain features when installing a Sim card.
