This problem seems to have arisen with the Dec. 7 Samsung Pay update. It's another example of a widespread longstanding serious problem that Samsung refuses to acknowledge. (I've been encountering it on my N960U1 too.)

Android Authority has an article about the problem and a possible workaround: https://www.androidauthority.com/sam...-drain-943032/. It's good to see a tech site publicizing the problem and trying to get Samsung's attention.

For those having the problem, it doesn't matter if the app is used at all. The battery drain is coming from running in the background.

Counterintuitively, as the article notes, disabling battery optimization for Samsung Pay Framework seems to diminish the problem.

I recently bought the Note 9 and I don't appear to have the battery drain issue. And I use Samsung pay a lot.

There's a new version of Samsung Pay (3.7.10) that touts unspecified "bug fixes". With the new version, the app's battery usage (so far) is back down to 0.1% (instead of 20-30%).
