Does samsung have a software program like apples has.. where it checks your phone to see if you have the latest updates?

Yup, you can either do it directly from the phone or if the update isn't available via OTA, you can always use Smart Switch on a computer to check for any available updates.

If you are talking about apps, most app stores will check if you have the latest app versions installed.

Install this, and once you connect the phone to the computer you should see an option to check for OS updates.

As the other post suggests, for APP updates, Play Store and Galaxy Apps both will check for updates but you can select to either install automatically or just be notified and update manually.

Or use sammobile to download the firmware and Odin to flash it.

All you need is every month go into settings and check for software updates and it will Inform you if you have the latest.
