The 'new' Dex that is being offered on the Note 10+, is it available on the Note 9?
I guess what I am asking is, is this a software update or is it phone hardware upgrade?

    Thanks all...

DEX is already available on the Note 9. You just need an HDMI to USB Type C adapter.

What's the difference between the "new" DEX on the Note 10 and the "old" DEX, on the Note 9?

Previous versions used an hdmi to USB Type c to a monitor. You could also add a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to you phone for the "Computer Experience" With the note 10 DeX is built in to windows 10 so you can just plug your Note 10 into a windows 10 PC or laptop with a normal USB type c cable and run straight from Windows 10. https://www.theverge.com/2019/8/7/20...unpacked-event

There is also a dock that can be used. You can leave it set up and just drop the phone in.

I am downloading the Dex software for Windows 10 now, and will try it with my Samsung monitor, via USB C...

Well, I installed Dex on my Windows 10 computer (work computer). Then, connected the Note 9, drivers installed and such.

Alas, nothing shows in Dex. Based on a few FAQ pages, it could be a work group policy (GPO).
So, all that to say, I will check from my personal computer later.

If I have a windows computer handy, why would I want to use my phone as a computer replacement?

Fair enough, but if it's a business computer, it would likely be too locked down to allow the DEX to function.

I still don't get the benefit of connecting the Note 9 to a computer, in order to use the Note 9 as a computer substitute, when all you need is a monitor and keyboard.

Maybe think about it more of an accessory.

Example, you're working from your computer, but, also having a text communication back and forth. Versus picking up your phone each time, to respond, maybe simply use the Dex interface, no? - if that is an option...

DeX for Windows does not work on the Note 9. You'll need the dock or the hdmi to usb type C adapter and the version intended for the Note 9.

I suspect it is only going to use whatever is on your Note 9, it's not using anything on your computer except the Dex.

Actually I'm just about to order a hub https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07JVHS863/...cUvbUpU6635280 I've already got the HDMI monitor, keyboard and mouse all ready to go.

The main idea is really just to have your device on a bigger screen with a keyboard and mouse and depending on the hub you use, extra storage can be available. I think it will work well actually. When you look in to the advantages of the hub, one has to wonder if DEX isn't better on the Note 9 than on the Note 10 where you are connecting directly to windows without a hub.

But when I connect my Note9 to my tv on hdmi3 slot I don't select Dex. I just mirror screen. Phone is already set up on Bluetooth for keyboard and mouse. I can go into excel and use it just as I would in Dex. What is the point of Dex? Screenmirror accomplishes the same thing?

If you have selected Dex and it's not for you that's cool. From what I have found, DEX is a much broader Android experience that simply what is on the phone. More like a Chromebook experience.

In what way? Please be specific. To me a chromebook is just like my phone only bigger. I notice no broader experience but I also don't know what broader experience means exactly.

Multiple windows open on the same screen, makes multitasking easier, creating spreadsheets, documents, powerpoint presentation on a bigger screen is much easier without having to transfer files back and forth.

As I said, if it's not for you that's fine, I'm not trying to convince anybody they should be using it. I don't even have it running myself yet but I've watched plenty of YouTube videos on it to see that it is something that I'll use quite often.

OK multiwindows ARE a plus I didn't think of! I just wonder... will the Android version of excel allow two spreadsheets to be simultaneously displayed working back and forth without saving every time?

Not sure but if I get something set up in the next few weeks I'll let you know.

Yes it is - here is @Office365 running on a touchscreen dock for Samsung Note 9 using Samsung DeX. The touchscreen also allows signature capture capability too.
