I am very interested in a large Android tablet with good display and a pen. I want to be able to take notes and touch up photos. Is this tablet still worth buying and using the last official software update? There is no other options available. I can find good used ones for around $300 or so.

This is more expensive, but what about a Surface 3? Still has a pen, full Windows, about as large internal storage, and should still get updates.

I would prefer Android to do the things that I want. Windows has some pluses, but mostly limitations for what I want. If I was going windows, I would just splurge for a Surface Pro 4 since my laptop is getting a bit aged, but all the Android apps make for much more options available.

Fair enough. Thought I would throw that out there to think about.

Thanks for the input. I probably will pass on the Note Pro since it is no longer maintained. If nothing new shows up I will probably be getting that Surface pro this winter, maybe a new model. Maybe I can run one of the emulators adequately on it for Android support.

Counter suggestion: if you do get the surface, and it can adequately replace your laptop.... convert the laptop to a Linux PC. Might refresh the old machine, and keep the new device itch at a minimum....lol

Scored a great deal on the i5/8/256 Surface Pro 4 today thanks to Windows Central tip. Hopefully windows 10 is more bearable than it is on my wife's laptop.
The main advantage of this for me is that I will be able to do some video editing.
I probably will keep my old laptop as is. I don't have any use for Linux outside of work. Though I might try to dual boot chrome on it. It should be great for that.

I still hope Samsung brings a new high end Android note tablet. I had the original note phone and once over the novelty, I hardly used the stylus because it is just too small for much drawing or note taking. I think a pen pairs much better with at least an 8" tablet and preferably larger.

ASUS announced a new 10" tablet that sounds decent and supports a stylus. The main limitation of it is going to be the complaints that seem to come with ASUS Android software and it has a Mediatek processor which might be ok, but don't count on updates.

How's the Surface Pro 4 treating you?

I'm starting to seriously consider one myself over another Android tablet.

Still use my Note Pro daily but I'm starting to get the itch for something new and a bit faster.

SP4 is pretty slick. I haven't used it tons but Win10 is much more bearable on it than the older Dell 11" 2in1 that my wife has. I still need to look into bluestacks or one of the other options to run Android apps on Windows. I went with the Pro because I want the power to do some video editing and the 8GB because I always end up with tons of browser tabs open. If you don't need that, I think the regular Surface would be better for battery and weight and cost. I would wait a month until they announced the Surface Pro 5 to see if you need that or to get better deals on the SP4 new or used. The best part of the SP4 is that it plays content from my HDHomerun Prime network TV tuner way smoother than my Android devices, which is half of my use for a tablet.

Cool thanks for the feedback. I'm looking to wait for the SP5 announcement to see what it will have to offer. Right now if I were to get a SP4 it would be the i7 variant with 16gb of RAM and 512GB of storage. Granted at the price I could buy a couple of large iPad Pros but at least I'd be rocking full fledged apps that I truly need (MS Office in PC format, not mobile or Mac, and solid PDF editing on Windows platform).

I have a Surface Pro 3 and honestly it just sits and collects dust. I do run AMIDuOS on it so I can boot into Android, but it was slow (slower than the note)

I use my note all the time without issue, so for me it's still worth it. I have the LTE version and it works just fine. I do worry about that day when the apps stop working since it's no longer supported.

Using Officesuite Pro desktop on mine for 'work' files. Rarely use the micro mouse I got for it. Always is in the Logitech keyboard case. Use it more than my i7 laptop pc. The i7 is 4k with a 30" screen usually attached. The Note Pro is 2k with better networking and the OS works better.

That Chromebook Pro that was leaked looks like it could be a great option. I think I am likely to get one at least for the wife (since I have the SP4 now), though I may use it quite a bit as well.
