Cannot turn microphone on in Skype

This seems to be a common problem, but none of the solutions I've found have worked. The problem is simply that the microphone icon is crossed out when I'm making a call and cannot be turned on. I've made sure all other apps that use a microphone have that feature turned off and have installed old versions of Skype back to ver 7.000. I've done all I can figure out to do short of reseting the device. Skype told me to install old versions (not too old, according to them) - maybe I need to go older but it seems like some app has control of the microphone and will not let Skype use it.

Does anyone have words of wisdom?

I'm assuming this is on your Note 5. For what it's worth, I just tried it on mine and it works fine. I do remember having problems with early Android tablets, but nothing in the last few years.

It did work on mine too, but just recently stopped working. That's why I think it has something to do with other app settings.
