Do I need to replace my microphone?

I've been having trouble on my new (for me, otherwise used) Note Pro 12.2 with what I thought was a Skype problem. However, I have discovered that the microphone is not picking up the sound very well. If I speak closely and loudly, the sound is picked up but it is not clear nor very loud. When I try to talk through Skype, my voice is very low, HOWEVER, any touch to the device is heard loudly. If I just simply touch the screen with my finger, I can hear it clearly on Skype. Tapping on the device anywhere or near the microphone comes through very loudly. What does this mean? Is the microphone bad or has it shifted inside the case so that my voice doesn't get through but mechanical sounds do?

Any suggestions?

My first thought is the hole is blocked or plugged with gunk. I doubt the microphone itself has moved but if you want to check I believe the back plastic cover is removable without much risk. See here:

That's one of those "Why didn't I think of that" moments! Thanks, that did the trick - it was plugged with grime.
