Notification sound wont change?

Hi everyone, I keep trying to change my notification sound but it seems to remain the whistle sound which I despise. Anyone know how to change it? I'm going into sound and changing the "notification" sound from there but it seems not to be working?

Go to messages app.. Go to where it lists all your message threads.. press your menu button on your phone..go to settings.. Then all the way at the bottom there is select ringtone.
