I never have wifi turned on, but the last few days I have had an AT&T Software Update, Version V4_2_1212_3_1 popping up. I did not accept the update and kept postponing it. This morning it updated without my permission anyway over their network.

I've searched all over but I can't find any information on this update. I'd like to know what it is and what it does. Is there any place I could find the official documentation for this update?

Are there any ways to disable these automatic updates in the future?

Welcome to Android Central! This is about as official as it gets, unfortunately: Update the Firmware for the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket (i727)- AT&T Wireless Support. It doesn't give any specific details.

You can't turn off the automatic system updates unless you root the device and freeze the system updater app.

Thanks for the welcome and the link! It's odd that all the updates say that they need WiFi but this one pushed through over the AT&T 4G.

As this phone is quite old I am thinking of rooting it soon. Are there any guides you could recommend?
