I have a Galaxy S2 and I use a long and loud message tone that makes sure I can hear it even if I'm outside on a busy street and the vibration doesn't go through to me properly.
On a iPhone (not that I would ever whant one ;-> ) when a message is received I could just pick up the phone and even though this long alert is still ringing I can press volume down to silence it, and then go about my business reading my sms or email or whatever.
However I have yet to find such functionality on the Galaxy S2, the alert tone goes through to the end no matter what.
I'm on stock JB as of now but earlier when i rolled Cyanogenmod 9 and later 10 I had the verry same problem.
Can it be done?
