Hi,

I started using my new S10 a few days ago, having come from a S9 (and several generations of the S series before it)

What I really loved about the S9 was that I could use my fingerprint to open the phone from the lockscreen. It was very easy to locate and very quick.

I'm struggling to do the same with the S10.

I currently have:

A PIN set up
Face recognition registered
Fingerprints registered

I also have smart lock on for when I'm at home.

Despite all this, I struggle to open up my homescreen and access it quickly.

I have four fingerprints added and, if I manage to locate the invisible (!) sensor it won't always open it up. Sometimes, it HAS worked but there's a slight delay that occurs, where I'm not sure if it's registered or not.

I want to keep my phone as secure as possible. What settings do you guys use for quick, easy, secure access?

(btw - I've also added fingerprints from multiple angles, but that hasn't helped)

Many thanks,

Mike

Hello Mike,
I'm not sure what type of trouble you are experiencing, is it difficulty using the fingerprint scanner? I come from an S7 Edge to the S10, and once unlocked, the S10 opens directly to the home screen just as the S7 did. Although I will add that the S10 fingerprint scanner is much less accurate than the one the S7 used.

Hiya,

Yeh, generally speaking, when it does unlock it opens straight to the homescreen.

My issues is getting it to unlock quickly whilst retaining the security measures. A number of times my face isn't recognised and/or my fingerprint won't scan, which then prompts me to type in my PIN.

It's much more cumbersome than previous models (and I don't think there's a fault with my phone, other than a design issue!), but I just wondered if there was a quicker way to unlock, whilst retaining the security measures, that I'm maybe missing?

I agree that the fingerprint scanner is much too finicky... Only thing I can suggest that I found works better is to hold your finger in place longer than you did on your previous device. It seems to need more time to read your prints.

FPS sucks.

I have better luck with facial recognition. I double tap, look at the phone, and the lock screen goes away pretty quickly. But even that's not foolproof.

FPS for unlocking to the home screen simply is not viable. Not in a world where you simply brush over the S9 FPS on the back and the screen INSTANTLY appears. There is nothing like that S9 family FPS. No, Samsung simply went for fashion over form with the feature on the S10. Shame on them. It worked fine and wasn't broken; they had no reason to "fix" it other than to have marketing slick fodder for the people who live and breathe for, and slobber over, every "ALL NEW!" feature on an upcoming phone. Using the phone? Samsung apparently doesn't care.

Removing the factory installed screen protector helps. Also, try registering the same fingerprint multiple times. If you want the fingerprint sensor always visible, turn on the Always on Display.

On my S10+ i have registered my fingerprint twice with both thumbs and it isn't too bad. I agree it doesn't always light up and you do need to press quite hard. You can also change the sensitivity in settings. So that the sensor is more responsive. It is under display in the settings menu. Screenshot_20201010-010316_Settings.jpeg

Thanks for the responses everyone. Completely agree that there was no need to change from the S9 fingerprint sensor - which worked quickly and accurately.

Getting into the habit of double tapping first has helped and then wait and see which bio security thing kicks in first. The problem with face recognition is that it can't see my face if I'm wearing a mask or if it's night time and I'm outdoors.

I'm aware that, a year ago, me being outside in the dark, wearing a mask, would have given an entirely different slant to this post!
