Has anyone been able to make this work without allowing the message APP to override DND?

Tried that and a reset a couple of times, cleared cache however DND will not allow any exceptions. I get the pop up on notification bar just no sound.

That's strange because it works for me, but I'm running OneUI 3.1.

Works for me. My problem is the custom ringtones I use for texts received gets wiped out from time to time.

That is odd. Have you dug into your Favourite Contacts' individual settings, to see if the problem lies on that end? Is it just one Favourite Contact, or all of them?

I set up a bunch of them and then I noticed that after a few weeks they had all gone back to default. So I set them up again and the same result after a few weeks. I cleared cache and finally even a reset and one last time set them up. Same result in a few weeks. So I just gave up.

I haven't tried any custom ringtones, so I'm not sure about that.

The ringtones weren't custom, they were just the standard set included with the phone. I put different tones on texts from different people that I wanted to know who was texting without looking. The remainder had the default. After a couple of weeks the people I had set up with a specific ringtone had just gone back to default.
