    Define dead.... if it can't turn on at all, you are mostly out of luck. There are forensic data recovery services that can recover data like that, but they are often extremely expensive (they usually deal with police/legal investigations).

    If you aren't able to power the device on, you won't be able to get them. With that said, there are some exceptions. If you happen to have AT&T and the S2 happen to have the text back up option. I know the newer AT&T devices have it enabled from factory. Not sure about an older phone like a s2.
