I was in my tmo store tonight checking out the Ultra and the Plus and got to talking to a rep. He said he's a tech head and an android guy and said to save a bunch of money and get the McLaren. He said it'll perform just as well and do nearly everything just as good. I've never had a OnePlus before and know nothing of what they offer. Was he blowing smoke?

I've owned two OnePlus devices (6T McLaren Edition and 7 Pro) and most Samsung flagships over the past several years (thanks in part to JOD). There is no comparison hardware-wise. Camera, call quality, speaker quality, speakerphone quality, etc. are all superior on the Samsungs. The best thing I can say about the OnePlus devices is that OxygenOS is pretty cool. Definitely one of the best Android skins around, and better than most others. Also loved the 90hz display on the OnePlus, though OnePlus animations/transitions kind of suck.

BTW, if you care about wireless charging at all, that is a no-go on the OnePlus devices. Let alone reverse wireless charging (PowerShare).

Be careful when someone in a retail store makes a recommendation. I'm not suggesting he doesnt have a point about saving money, but the OnePlus is on a different level and he may have monetary compensation to push a specific brand.

It might be a close contender to the S20 but not the Plus or the Ultra and still it would have to be the McLaren Edition and cheaper as you're still compromising

OnePlus has fans just like Samsung, Apple, and other OEM's. Some more vocal than others. I don't have any experience with OnePlus other than store displays, but for me they're not any better. And this was before Samsung upped their refresh rate. I didn't even think 90hz on the OnePlus was that noticeable. OnePlus does have one thing going for it, and that's price. Whether the compromises of no wireless charging, not as good build, etc. are worth the price difference, that'll be up to you.
