I was finding that with the S22 Ultra, my Gmail notifications were coming in very delayed for new emails.

I went in to settings for the Gmail app for each email account, and checked the box to notify me of every new email in a thread, and not just one new email since the last time I looked at it.

Even though I was getting delayed notifications with just one new email, checking that box has fixed it so I get notified right away for all emails

I went to FairEmail and ditched the Gmail app, (which was slow in notifying me of new email). Now I get any emails to my Gmail addresses instantly, in FairEmail.

I had tried this and thought it was working. However if my phone was asleep for long enough, the delays happened even then. It seems like there is a delay of maybe a couple of stages or something when your phone is asleep. But if the screen is off long enough, at least for me, the delays happen anyway.

Yep, I have this same experience with every android phone I currently own. I also have an iPhone 13 pro max. My notifications come in instantly on that phone so it's most definitely an Android issue.

It's most definitely NOT an Android issue. I've used FairEmail for a few years now with a number of different Android phones and have never experienced delayed notifications. It appears to be a Gmail App issue.

It is an Android issue because it happens with Twitter, Gmail, YouTube, and several other apps. Twitter and Gmail are the worst. I use the same applications on my iphone and don't have these issues, therefore it is an Android issue.

I have no issues with those apps, seems to be a selective problem, happens to some and not others. What we don't know are the numbers. We need a poll.

100% agree. There are countless posts regarding this on Samsung.com. I do know that every phone I've had since the S10 has had this issue. My wife also has it with her Pixel 5A.

The MyQ garage door app just notified me about my garage door closing. The notification was 8 minutes late. It came through immediately on the iPhone.

Could these delay problems be a provider problem?

I have used the Google mail app for as long as I can remember, and I have never had any delays to email or message notifications as some have noted.
And that is proven to me almost everyday by numerous methods. And that is for the times when my phone has been unused for hours at a time.

Many times I am on the laptop, my phone next to me on the table. And if I get an email or a message, my phone will beep or chirp (depends on what is received) and a second or two later, a message will appear on the bottom right of my computer screen stating a message was received or an email. And I would expect a one-to-two second delay since the GMAIL and google messages come directly to the phone; whereas, for the computer they have to process through Thunderbird (emails) or My Phone Companion (messages) before landing on the laptop.

Other means of noting no delay are when I use my credit card at a store, I receive the notification of the sale chirp on my phone basically, the second the screen on the register at the store says, Approved, Please Remove Card.

I just checked my settings and I do have the "notify me of every new email" turned On, but I'm looking at my Pixel 4XL and honestly cannot remember seeing this setting before. However, when setting up these new phones there are more settings to play with than crooked politicians in the world.

And when I had the S22U I do not remember turning it on, possible I did, but the S22U when I had it had no delays.

However, when the new S22 arrives next month, you can bet I will check this setting.

Been using Aqua Mail Pro for years and get instant Gmail notifications.

Fairemail, how do you get rid of that status bar icon and still receive your instant notifications?

In the settings of the app itself - Scroll to the Notifications tab then under that, the 3rd button down is "Receive Channel". Click on that and turn off the slider and it disables the "monitoring" icon in the status bar. I still get notifications of new emails immediately but no longer have the icon pinned up there.

Can someone describe or know a link to somewhere that I can read up on exactly what this Developer>Standby Apps>"ACTIVE, WORKING_SET, FREQUENT, RARE, RESTRICTED" is and how it is working, what it is doing? Some of my apps are grayed out here and the ones that are not have different radio circles chosen. I would like to understand this menu better. Thanks.

Usual checklist. Make sure notify for every email is selected. Also go to apps-gmail-battery make sure unrestricted is selected. I haven't had delayed notifications.

Thanks for the link. Now that I understand better this part of the Developer Options, I found more information. However there is one thing I am not sure of...

About 1/2 of my apps are greyed out with a standby status of either "Never" or "Exempted". I think the "Exempted" ones may all be apps where, in the normal app settings, I set the specific app to have "Unrestricted" battery access. But the ones that have a status of "Never", "Rare", or "Restricted" all are set in the app to have optimized battery use, (probably set to that on installation). So the system must be choosing the standby status of apps that have battery use set to optimized?

By the way, my Gmail standby status is set to "Exempted". But I now use FairEmail so the Gmail app is unused.

Yeah the adaptive battery will control this and choose what state the app goes in with it toggle off it should all say active standby. If you choose to go into the app and restrict or turn background app process that probably going have a impact in that developer settings option also . Like if I had someone device in my hand i could test what going on by matter of 5 to 10 minutes why they delayed but unfortunately i to go back and forth on a forum and hopefully that user went over all the steps it tough but giving a option for some of you to mess around with.
