It looks like the phone was either in Airplane mode or you had no cellular signal for some long periods of time. Were you in a building that has lots of metal? Underground?

neither. have been outside most of the time and when i've checked the screen it was full bars.

I don't know what to say - that screenshot is clearly showing black segments (no signal) for almost half the time.

You could try GSam Battery Monitor Pro: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm.pro (there's also a free version) and take a look at the Radio Detail

it'll give you a clear breakdown of your cellular signal.
