New to the group, so if I make any mistakes, if I use the wrong terminology or ask the wrong questions, please let me know.

I'm in the process of looking for a phone, and the Galaxy S3 looks like the only real logical choice. I have run into a few walls, though, and would love some input from anyone with experience, which I certainly lack. I have quite a few questions, so I'll try to keep them numbered, so if you have an answer to one and not the others, I welcome it.

Let me start by prefacing with my situation. I live in the US. I've gone about 2 months without a phone, allowing VZW to close my account. Couldn't afford to keep it, and was okay with not having it, tbh. So, I go back, now that I kinda need a phone these days, and see what needs to be done to buy a phone. They tell me that I have a price to pay, and once I pay that, I can upgrade. But, then they tell me that once I upgrade, I will no longer have my unlimited data. Well, I don't want any part of a contract that caps my data. So I know the alternative is to either leave VZW or to buy a phone outright. It's most likely that I can't afford a phone outright. I'm sure most of us can empathize. So I've been knocking around the idea of buying an ATT phone and unlocking it to put it on VZW. So, I suppose question 1 would be, is this even possible?

I start doing all of this research about cdma and gsm and lte and upper lte, and realize that a lot of it is just completely over my head. But I'm curious if anyone has ever managed to completely unlock phones. I know phones can be unlocked in certain ways, but , question 2, has anyone ever unlocked a phone, specifically the S3, to where it was unlocked enough to undo the restrictions that would prevents a phone from going from ATT's network to VZW's?. I know that there is no difference in hardware in any of the different models from carrier to carrier. But I'm also aware that carriers will disable cdma if their company uses GSM and vice versa, so I'm curious if those can be adjusted or enabled once the phone is unlocked.

I've also seen the international version, the GT-I9300. I thought I read somewhere that this works anywhere in the world, but I cannot find where I read that, so, question 3 would be, would this work for me on VZW in the US? And I mean completely be functional, not where cdma works, but lte doesn't, or vice versa.

Any answers, advice, notions you have are all appreciated. The ultimate goal here is to get an S3 to work on VZW, but not from VZW, as I don't want to lose my unlimited data. I REALLY cannot afford to just buy a phone outright, so this isn't really an option, more of a last resort.

I do plan on rooting my phone, but that's a bridge I can only cross once I get to it LOL. THANKS GROUP!

so are you planning to buy the phone outright and then pick and choose which carrier you want to use? (recommended) (EDIT just reread your post sorry)
yeah theres a few gt-i9300 (international version) owners in the US on this forum. itl work (as far as i know) on any carrier. the gt-i9300 has quad-core cpu but doesnt have LTE (ultra fast internet)
hope someone from US can give u more info

ps an unlocked (sim free) gt-i9300 will get updates, the new version of android for example, before the carrier versions

I see that you're a GT-I9300 owner as well, but you're from the Kingdom. Are you sure LTE doesn't work in the US? Or is this speculation from the fact that it doesn't work in England? I hope that doesn't sound offensive. It simply is just a question, no insult intended.

actualy im scottish and dont recognise a monarchy or "kingdom" lmao

the gt-i9300 doesnt have an LTE radio in it so no LTE anywhere.
p.s, UK is close to rolling out LTE

gt-i9300 has quad-core, 1gb RAM and an FM radio/ north american variants have dual-core, 2gb RAM, no FM radio (no big deal really).
if i was in US and had access to unlimited LTE, id buy a US s3 (can they be bought outright and unlocked, anyone?)

So, if I want a Samsung Galaxy S3 for VZW, and I want the full capabilities of said phone and carrier, I'm stuck with buying the VZW version of the phone, huh? And if I want to keep my unlimited data, I'm stuck with buying with the full price as well. Great! LOL!

Why not go with Sprint? They offer unlimited data.

This is actually a good question (I hate pointing out when something is a good question. It makes me sound condescending. I honestly don't mean to be.

While Sprint offers unlimited data, VZW has a stronger, more wide-spanning network, both in 3g and 4g. Sprint's unlimited everything is $99, and that's before taxes and other increases. I pay about $90 monthly for my bill now total. I was about to commit to Sprint until I found out that it's 4g is pretty weak in Tampa, which is where I'm from. My sister has Sprint, and while at home, she uses our wifi. But while at work, which is right down the street, her phone struggles, and she has a Galaxy S3 as well.

I was in the same boat. I had Verizon for a year and a half. Good thing my contract was only a year and didn't have to pay a etf. They were expensive. I went the prepaid route for 5 months. But then tmobile was offering unlimited everything including 4g for the same price. Tbh my signal is good no matter where I go. Two weeks ago I was in northern California, last week I was in DC Maryland Virginia Delaware new jersey and New York City with nothing less than 3 4g bars. From my understanding you won't be able to unlock a gsm phone to use on a CDMA company. I could be wrong with the GS3 and all. I would go tmo

Either way if u get an att gs3 from att you will have to keep their plan for 2 years while u are on verizon bc u cant get it for the subsidized price without a contract thats even if its possible to switch an att gs3 over to verizon...i think u are either gonna have to upgrade and lose unlimited data, switch to tmobile or sprint or even att or pay off contract which i did and got mine from a guy on here for $375

I have had my S3 for about two months on Verizon. Where I live Verizon is the strongest network and we are getting more and more 4G coverage. If you have any interest in 4G connection speeds the International model may disappoint since it won't work at 4G speeds. Verizon is taking any chance to get people off of unlimited plans because they make more money. Since Verizon and AT&T are different systems I don't think you could unlock a GSM phone and use it on a CDMA network. I haven't searched around about the availability of a unlocked GSM phone. Do keep Sprint in mind if they have good coverage where you would use the phone and a decent unlimited plan. Good luck hope you enjoy the S3 as much as I do.
