    Do I need it to connect to Kies?

    Cause I tied connection using another cable and it wouldn't work

    No you can use any GOOD QUALITY USB Cable...some cables are cheap and wont work...if your getting another, I suggest one with a gold tip

    aparently non samsung ones charge slower but for data transfer theyre fine (ive used a kindle one)

    I'm using BlackBerry and Motorola cables from my old phones. Have not run across any issues that I can trace back. If I remember correctly my S3 didn't come with a new cable so glad I can reuse the ones I have.

    Just use Wifi File Explorer and uninstall Kies

    Don't forget that not all USB ports on the computer are the same. For instance, my top USB Ports won't detect the phone/kies when plugged in but it will charge. The ports on the front of the computer and rear of the computer work with everything. Might just have to chance which port it is plugged in to.
