I would think it suggests it so people don't go over on their data plans. I only turn on wifi when I am in wifi range.

I use wi-fi all the time at home since I have a relatively poor 4G signal in the house. I rarely use wifi outside the house. Regarding GPS I keep it on all the time. It only activates when an app needs it for some reason and it's just as easy keeping it on.

They have databases of wifi locations that are used in Geolocation. I think I let them get a location for mine. So if anyone is walking or driving by my house with their Google Maps powered GPS, their device shakes hands with my router, and even though it can't "connect" to my network without a password, it reports the network to Google, which returns its location.

These phones use a combination of GPS, cell towers, and known wifi network locations to pinpoint your location. Just helps with accuracy.

Wifi will drain your battery when on and not connected, so keep it off unless you're using it no matter what Google now says, the gps is plenty.

As for the gps, leave it on always, it only uses battery when it is being used by an app and that is only until it gets a location, so maybe a few seconds unless you're using navigation.

The battery impact by gps is very minimal. But leaving wifi on will be a big impact.

as i said though, wifi battery consumption is minimal, probably because mobile data is constantly on on my phone....
and cheers Ken, thats pretty cool :)
should i keep Maps enabled though to make the best of Now? that uses .5% in background...

PS wifi has cost me 0% today since ive been nowhere near a wifi signal i guess?

Lol I mean if you have a data limit wouldn't using Google now on your mobile data all the time make you go over your limit (if you have one)

I get no appreciable drain from WiFi whether I'm on a wifi network or not. I leave mine on all the time. I do turn off GPS when I don't use it. The GPS itself doesn't use much, but I've found that Google Maps launches itself and starts eating battery when the GPS is on. If I turn off GPS, I have no random Maps activity. It's not a huge drain, but it could add up to 10% extra drain during a normal work day. Your mileage - or your kilometerage in your case :D - may vary, so you should just try out various settings and see if there is any difference in battery drain. A lot is going to depend on signal strength. If you have a strong data or wifi signal, it chews less battery. If you have a weak signal, it destroys your battery life.

Well that depends where I'm at. I'm currently in Vallejo, CA and the speeds are shifty but in my second home in Maryland I'm getting around 12mbps which is my book is good as hell

If you're in an AT&T LTE area, I can tell you it's blazingly fast. I was getting my car fixed in Manassas, VA a couple months ago, and the LTE speeds were as fast (possibly even faster) as my home WiFi.
