I'm new to my Samsung Galaxy. Switched from iPhone 4s. I keep my phone in my pocket and very frequently I feel it hot and sure enough it's on. This never happened with my iPhone. I know of course that I can power Samsung down but I want to receive calls.

Maybe it's the placement of the buttons and that can't change, but I'm wondering if it's something else. If not, is there a protective case or covering that I can use to keep the phone active but off while in my pocket? I don't want a holster.

I'm also interested if others have the same problem of the phone appearing to randomly turn on while pocketed.

If the phone is getting uncomfortably hot, there's something wrong with it. Make sure any important files are saved on your PC or a cloud account (or both). Just in case.

If it's warm, but not uncomfortable, it's an electronic device - it produces heat. All electronic devices do.

About the only way the screen can turn on in your pocket is if you press the power button (but then, assuming your screen timeout is 30 seconds, which it should be - that's 30 seconds after you did something), it will turn off in 30 seconds, so it shouldn't get too warm if that's just from having the screen on.

"Active but off" are opposites. If the phone is off it's not active. It has to be on to receive calls. Cases have nothing to do with that.

(And a pocket is the worst place to keep a phone. If it's a back pocket you can sit on the phone and crush the screen. [If it's high enough in the pocket to prevent that, it's high enough to get squeezed out of your pocket and face-plant on the sidewalk.] If it's in a front pocket, you can easily bend in such a way that the phone cracks in half.)

Okay, I understand all that. And I want to keep my phone active to receive calls. Pocket placement (I use front pants, shirt, or coat) has it's hazards - understood. But I've been pocketing my phones (smart and unsmart) for decades with the most recent being an iPhone. There definitely is something different with this Samsung.

I think (subsequent to my thread starter) that part of the problem may be Android Auto app. It seems to turn on whenever I enter the car and doesn't turn off. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to use AA because it isn't working even though I have all the right hardware, OS, and updates (2017 LaCrosse Premium). I have a separate thread on this.

I'll deactivate or uninstall AA to see if that helps.
