Samsung stock earbuds only work when pressing inline buttons

Hey everyone,

Recently I noticed my stock earbuds only transmit sound when I press one of the inline buttons; otherwise on highest volume setting I can only hear minimal sound. I have tried combinations of starting the music, inserting/removing earbuds, stopping active applications, etc. but nothing has worked so far. Anyone knows if this is a hardware or a software issue?

I have been searching all over the net for answers to no avail.

Without having the phone on the bench to find out? That would be like flipping a coin. It could be either one. Try different earbuds. If they work it's the earbuds. If not, it's still either a hardware of software problem in the phone, and that's about as far as you can go by yourself.
