This is a two-parter question, please bear with me:

    1. If I buy a normal AT&T S4 Active, can I unlock it myself (and how would one go about doing that)? I saw a few sites on this but am not sure how reliable they are.

    2. Once unlocked, would it have the same functionalities when used with Verizon? And, while we're on that topic, would it have the same functionalities if I were to travel abroad using different SIM cards?

    1. You will probably be able to unlock it.

    2. You can not use an AT&T phone on Verzion or Sprint, only T-mobile because they and GSM and Verzion and Sprint are CDMA.

    Just to clarify:
    1. Do you know how one goes about learning how to unlock phones?
    2. What if I traveled abroad? Would an unlocked AT&T phone be usable?

What you quoted didn't have anything to do with Verizon.

    Fair enough.

1.) Google will be your friend, however buying an unlock code from ebay or other unlocking website will be much cheaper.

    2.) Yes.

I unlocked my brand new ATT Galaxy S4 Active via fastgsm.com cost me $12.49, not that $35-$50 nonsense.
It said instant unlock, but took about 6mins for email to come with unlock code.
I also did the NV setting change to make the ATT S4 a full-fledged Tmobile S4

Why does this site have 3 options for the Active?

    Galaxy IV Active
    Galaxy IV 4G
    Galaxy IV LTE

Yes, it is possible to unlock a device and choose a network according to your needs. There are so many professional sites which provides unlock codes. I have unlocked my Galaxy S4 by using www.unlockgalaxys.com.You may try this.

It's a lot easier than that. I had my old Blackberry as well as the Galaxy S2 unlocked by AT&T itself. As a matter of fact I just got out of the chat with AT&T tech dept (go under Contact on the AT&T website then choose chat) regarding getting an unlock code for my Galaxy S4 Active which I got on July 3rd. The nice rep said I have to wait 3 months since activation and as long as my account is in good standing they will provide the unlock code (you just give them the phone IMEI).
That's exactly how AT&T unlocked my previous phones (except for the iPhone 4 but that was beyond AT&T control). They will just ask you why you need it unlocked, in my case my family lives in Italy and I use Italian SIM cards when I go there. Simple as that.

I'm not sure why so many people pay to get an unlock code when AT&T gives it away for free.

And, no, you cannot use it on Sprint and Verizon because those stupid companies (the only ones in the civilized and uncivilized world) do not use SIM cards, they cripple their phone to be used within their network only.
That's actually why I quit Verizon after 5 years with them (and their horrible customer service). Nearly six years ago I went into an AT&T store and asked the personnel there: "If I switch to AT&T would you give me the unlock code for my phone?" the answer was yes, I switched and the same day I got the code (it was the Blackberry). I've actually been pretty happy with ATT customer service.

One more thing, a few months ago I was in the Middle East with my Galaxy S2. I had rooted it then unrooted it so the unlock code needed to be reapplied (the unlock code is always the same for a specific phone, once you have it it won't change). I confused my unlocked code with the protection code for my SIM card and I stupidly tried 5 times locking the phone permanently to AT&T (according to them).
Well, long story short, I spent a few days on Google searching rooting and unlocking and bit changing and after a full day of trials my Galaxy S2 is now completely rooted with a brand new kernel, new beautiful starting animation, latest version of JellyBean and unlocked again. If you're a little techie it's not hard to do, but you have to search a lot, read thoroughly (or you might end up bricking your phone) and be patient.

Because of people like me who bought it full price. AT&T said they would not give me the unlock code because I was not a subscriber.

I too just signed up to help out. I was looking this morning for ways to unlock my new phone since I just purchased it Saturday July 20th. I talked to the store rep that helped me and he said ATT would not give the code until the 2 year contract was up, but he also mentioned with the wink wink about sites on the net to do this for me. I had already done my Iphone 4s this way and paid the $30. I saw this post this morning and attempted the chat option with ATT. 2 minutes later I had the unlock code. Was a lot easier than I thought and saved me the money on unlocking it through another site.

    Steps I took.
Selected chat, selected Wireless support, then order status or international support, International features, plans and support. I just mentioned that I do international travel for family visits and work abroad.

Tech asked for my IMEI and gave me code. that simple.

Juangil75 (and everybody else for that matter),
Do you need to sign up for a plan to buy the phone at AT&T, or can I just buy the phone at the store outright without having to sign up for a plan? Also, will AT&T online support provide the unlock code if I am not a current AT&T subscriber? Or, if I am not a current AT&T subscriber, will I have to purchase an unlock code from one of the aforementioned websites? Thanks in advance!

I must say my experience with at&T has SUCKED! 7 phone calls and a 1 1/2 hour visit to a retail store and still can't get the jerks to unlock the phone even though i paid full price for the phone 4 months ago. The only reason given was that the line (not the phone) was under contract or that since it was an AT&T only device that they wouldn't unlock it. So aggravating that if a person pays for a $600 phone that any company can claim ownership and force people to beat their heads against walls to unlock them!

Calling bull**** here. FastGSM costs $30 just like most of the rest I have found and it takes a full day to get the code according to most reviewers.
The NV change blog is creditable and recommended though for those using tmobile or ATT who want the full coverage of both network towers.
The best solution is IF you have access to an ATT customer, you have them activate the phone and use it for 30 days and then have them request the unlock code for it.
The 2nd best solution is to find a code generator program linked to Samsung's database and generate your own IMEI codes and under bid the competition.
I am still working on this 2nd part and will update this post with the answers when I get them.

I used to think the same thing, but apparently verizon, and sprint both use gsm if you are on an LTE network, if you are 3g or below then yes you are on cdma.

I used a program called Towelroot.apk and apkinstaller from the play store. You just copy the apk file to your phone and then run the apkinstaller and it does everything. It even disabled KNOX.
